FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – The state reported the second largest single-day increase of new coronavirus cases Wednesday and two straight high-number days prompted speculation Gov. Andy Beshear will require masks in public or put limits on bars such as requiring seating.

Beshear said in his daily update he will make some announcements during his in-person update Thursday, but he didn’t say what those would be.

Andy Beshear on Wednesday updated Kentuckians on the state’s continued efforts to fight the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19).

“While we have been at a plateau in Kentucky, really for several weeks, over the last four to six days we are seeing larger numbers, said Beshear said Wednesday, announcing 402 new cases since Tuesday.  The largest one-day increase recorded in Kentucky thus far is 625 new cases on May 5, following an outbreak at the Green River Correctional Complex.

Wednesday’s increase pushed the state’s total to 17,919 since March 6.

“The rising case numbers are cause for concern, so tomorrow were going to announce some new requirements that are going to be mandatory,” Beshear said. “Given what we are seeing across the country with exploding numbers in certain places, my commitment is to make sure that doesn’t happen here, but I can’t do it alone.”

Last week, the governor told a group of mayors he might consider requiring all customers in bars and restaurants to be seated to help avoid groups of people gathering. The state, like much of the country, also has been increasingly embroiled in a debate over wearing masks, despite growing agreement wearing the masks can help slow the spread of the highly contagious virus.

Unfortunately, Beshear reported six new deaths Wednesday, raising the total to 608 Kentuckians lost to the virus.

The deaths reported include a 72-year-old man from Casey County; a 67-year-old man from Fulton County; two women, ages 73 and 77, and a 61-year-old man from Jefferson County; and a 74-year-old woman from Perry County.

As of Wednesday, there have been at least 451,451 coronavirus tests performed in Kentucky. At least 4,912 Kentuckians have recovered from the virus.

The Governor reminded everyone that his next press briefing will be tomorrow, July 9, at 4 p.m. EDT, and he also announced an additional press briefing for Friday, July 10, at 4 p.m. EDT.
