Fletchling will star in the March 2021 “Pokemon Go” Community Day. It’s an interesting pick as tiny robin Pokemon comes from the most recent generation of pocket monsters from the Kalos region and none of the starters from the Unova region — Snivy, Tepig or Oshawott — has had their day in the sun.

In fact, it’s been more than a year since the last starter had a Community Day on Jan. 19, 2020. That was Piplup. Since then, players have had a slew of Pokemon with moves that have more of a slant favoring player-vs-player matches in Go Battle League. I assumed that 2020 was just an exception because the coronavirus pandemic but here we are a few months into 2021, and future Community Days are looking less predictable.

That’s not to say that Fletchling and its final form Talonflame are bad Pokemon. They’re a fire- and flying-type Pokemon that’s comparable to Charizard. The Fletchling Community Day runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 6. The exclusive move for the event is the Fast move Incinerate, which is very good and changed the meta when it was released in November 2020. It made the likes of Ho-Oh and Typhlosion more viable in PvP. Those who evolve their Fletchling from Fletchinder to Talonflame by 7 p.m. will get Incinerate and find that the pocket monster does well in PvP with Reddit user and PvP expert JRE47 saying that it can win against Swampert if it’s level 50. That’s a notable feat. It’s going to be a Pokemon that excels in Ultra League, according to Go Hub.

With that said, shiny Fletchling itself is a decent-looking shiny. The developers substitutes its silver secondary color for goldish hue. It will stand out when you find one.

As with any Community Day, players can expect a bonus and this time around, it’s triple catch XP. That will be a boon for players who are on the road to level 50. As in previous Community Days, incense will last three hours. The Community Day Box this time around will cost 1,280 PokeCoins and feature 50 Ultra Balls, five Lucky Eggs, a Poffin and an Elite Fast TM. That’s not a great value but as always, the $1 Special Research story should be worth it given the items included. Lastly, taking photos of a Pokemon likely will get players a Fletchling encounter.

It will be interesting to see what the Fletchling pick says about the second season of “Pokemon Go.” The Season of Celebration ends March 1. Does Fletchling hint at a theme of renewal or change for the upcoming season? It’s one of the few Pokemon that changes its typing as the bird evolves. I’m also curious to see if a starter will ever get a Community Day again or if players will find shiny versions in events as they did with Snivy at the beginning of the year. Perhaps, this will all change when the pandemic is over.
