FARMVILLE, Va. – Prior to the Sunday's series opener against Ohio, Longwood field hockey held a senior day celebration for their four-member senior class.
Rio Weber gave the Lancers reason to celebrate after the game as well.
Weber broke a scoreless tie with 10:19 to play with her first career goal, as the Lancers beat Bobcats 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. Weber's goal, which came on a penalty corner, finally broke the ice for a Longwood offense that generated 16 shots, 12 shots on goal, and 11 penalty corners. Weber became the eighth Lancer to record a goal this season, as eight different Lancers recorded shots on Sunday, including six from Kolbey Donahue.
The offensive pressure was accompanied by a stifling defense that did not allow a shot, their first time holding their opponent without a shot attempt since Oct. 22, 2019 when they beat Saint Louis 2-0. The Longwood defense, led by the backline of Donahue, Ana Paula Lazaro, and Weber as well as 50 minute performances by Cammy Toddy and Charlotte Wilm in the midfield, has now recorded three shutouts in 2021, and has conceded just one goal in their last three games.
"Ohio is a very combative team," said Longwood head coach Iain Byers. "They are tough to break down. We are looking forward to another game tomorrow—hopefully we can repeat the performance and get another win."
In net for Ohio, Nele Graner made seven saves across 45 minutes. She was relieved briefly in the third quarter, as teammate Macy Lotze made three saves across 15 minutes of action as the pair combined for ten saves. Leah Warren added a defensive save on the goal line, as the Bobcats combined for 11 total saves to keep Ohio in the game.
However, the persistent Longwood offense was finally able to break through in the final frame. The Lancers totaled six shots and four corners in the final 15 minutes, highlighted by Weber's game winning goal. Longwood's 16 shots were their second most in 2021, as they have now scored in in seven of their eight games this season.
Ohio and Longwood will wrap up their two game series on Monday, April 11 at 12 p.m. in game two of their back-to-back set.
