Mets Analysis: -illar of the Day, Games 61-69 - Amazin' Avenue

rintongs.blogspot.com

During the 2020/2021 offseason, the Mets made an unprecedented move: they signed two players whose last name ends with -illar, Jonathan Villar and Kevin Pillar. While the names are pronounced differently (Vi-yar versus Pill-ar), the two bench pieces starters for the Mets have contributed a fair amount to their early success already.

Inspired by our own Maggie Wiggin on Twitter, we will declare an “-illar of the Day,” celebrating which player had a more productive (or less destructive) day for the Mets.

While neither -illar has hit the Injured List (aka the IL, or the illar List, amirite?), Jonathan hasn’t played in a few days, so you’d think that would mean a second straight week of Pillar dominance. Well, you just played yourself. Keep reading and learn something.

Game 60: Cubs at Mets

After nearly getting shut out in last week’s tally, Jonathan Villar started the fresh set of -illars strong, collecting two hits in an otherwise disappointing loss to the Cubbies.

This was a dismal offensive game that ended in a walk off for Washington. Since neither brought home the crown, it’s time for an alternate -illar!

-illar of the Day: The only person to win an Academy Award for a French-language performance, Marion Cotillard!

Game 62: Mets at Nationals

Villar collected a hit and a run in the first game of the double dip, while Pillar barely played.

This disaster of a bullpen game saw neither -illar do squat, so we have to look elsewhere for our jollies.

-illar of the Day: Ken Follet’s 800 page novel, which has been adapted into a miniseries, a board game (!), and a video game (!!), The Pillars of the Earth.

Bonus Award

As I mentioned in my half of the doubleheader write-up, Jon Heyman tweeted a photo of Kevin Pillar with the caption “This is a ballplayer.” This is hilarious for a million reasons and, while I mean no disrespect at all to OF Doom, who has been a delight to cover and root for, it seems like Heyman is just giving him that honorific due to his dirty uniform. And so, we debuted a new award that evening, the inguaural:

‘Identified as a Member of His Chosen Profession Due to Filth’ of the Day: Kevin Pillar

Game 64: Mets at Nationals

Kyle Schwarber hit three dingers in the Mets’ series-losing effort, but Pillar hit one, and one is better than nothing!

Game 65: Braves at Mets

Villar scored two runs in Jacob deGrom’s brief but dominant 5-inning appearance in the first game of the doubleheader.

-illar of the Day: Jonathan Villar

Game 66: Braves at Mets

The -illar health would run out with this game, as Jonathan Villar left the second game of the doubleheader with calf tightness. But before that, Villar went 1 for 2 with a walk.

Game 67: Braves at Mets

With Villar on the shelf and Pillar going hitless, we have no choice but to, again, sublet the award to a non-Met.

-illar of the Day: Musicians with a career spanning nearly 60 years and an appearance on the Andy Griffith Show, bluegrass family band the Dillards!

Game 68: Braves at Mets

A rare process-based award, Pillar has been hitting the ball on the screws for the entire Braves series, but has had very little success to show for it. We award good process around here, so let’s make it official.

-illar of the Day: Kevin Pillar

Jonathan Villar: 24 wins, 4 ties

Kevin Pillar: 19 wins, 4 ties

Other -illars: 8

After a week without a non-Met victory, three other -illars took the prize home this week. Let’s hope for a return to the starting lineup for Jonathan, and a bunch of Mets wins in the next week.
