Cool day passes to Hudson Valley hotspots - Times Union

When Ferris Bueller lit up Chicago in the 1986 movie, he didn’t need a full 48 hours to make magic (after all, it wasn’t called “Ferris Bueller’s Weekend Off”). Nope, he packed it all in a day — really, more like a few hours. This summer is the chance to channel your inner Ferris.

The Hudson Valley is rife with luxurious resorts, adventurous dude ranches, and riverfront pools — and they can all be yours for an afternoon. Whether you’re looking to fill a day upstate or need a mini getaway in your own backyard, these properties all offer day passes to get your fill of relaxation or adrenaline without splurging on an overnight stay.

Pine Ridge Dude Ranch

“People really love coming to the ranch with day passes, especially locals within an hour,” said Mike Offner, owner of Kerhonkson’s Pine Ridge Dude Ranch. “A lot of people that have their second homes from the city in the Hudson Valley like to come out with either a group of friends or with their kids to go swimming and horseback riding.”

The day pass at this 600-acre site in the Shawangunk Mountains includes lunch, access to indoor and outdoor pools, tractor rides, a private lake, the bounce pillow, petting zoos and more for $100 for adults and $75 for children. Even a pony ride is included, with horseback trail rides available for an additional fee of $25.

Mohonk Mountain House, located in New Paltz, has so many activities to do in a day that it might be hard to just pick one type of pass. This mountaintop resort offers various pass “flavors”: summer sports, hiking trails, the spa, various outdoor recreations, and golf.

For those who like a mix of options, the summer sports pass ($125 for the day) includes one 9-hole round of golf, a one-hour tennis court reservation, 30-minute use of a boat on Mohonk Lake, access to hiking trails, and the mountain house, and afternoon tea and cookies. The hiking trails pass, meanwhile, entitles guests to roam 85 miles of trails ranging in difficulty for just $30. The outdoor recreation pass offers horseback riding options ($90 to $120 per person) and boating ($20) separately. A reservation at the spa, which has treatments averaging around $200, includes access to the outdoor heated mineral pool and more.

The Hudson Valley offers other spas, too, like Rhinebeck’s Mirbeau Inn & Spa, whose day pass doesn’t require booking a treatment. For $60 Monday through Thursday and $90 Friday and Sunday, day guests get access to herbal-infused steam rooms and saunas, a meditation area, a hot spa pool and a fitness center with yoga and spin classes. Day passes are not available on Saturdays.

At YO1 Health Resort in Monticello, day passes cost $400, and entitle holders to a treatment (massage, mud or hydrotherapy, a yoga and meditation session), meals (vegetarian breakfast, lunch and dinner with a fresh, cold-pressed juice) and access to all on-property amenities like the indoor pool, fitness room and trails across the resort’s full 1,300 acres.
