RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Day one of the 2021 Pan American Championships has come to a close in Rio de Janeiro with Team USA holding second place overall.
Rising senior Vitaliy Guimaraes is repesenting Oklahoma on Team USA and is joined in Rio de Janeiro by fellow U.S. team members Cameron Bock (Michigan), Paul Juda (Michigan), Riley Loos (Stanford) and traveling alternate Donnell Whittenburg (Salto Gymnastics). Stanford University's Mark Freeman and the University of Michigan's Yuan Xiao have been named to the coaching staff.
Team USA finished with an overall score of 248.400, putting them in second place after day one of competition. All four team members finished in the top six for the day. Juda holds second with an 83.000, Loos sits in fourth with an 82.150, Guimaraes holds fifth overall with 81.450 and an 81.200 puts Bock in sixth after today's competition.
Guimaraes scores on each event made him a vital part of the national team. Starting on still rings, Guimaraes put up a 13.200. The second rotation was on vault where Guimaraes stuck the landing and put up his highest score of the day with a 14.500.
Moving into the third rotation, the team tackled parallel bars and Guimares tallied a 13.150. Next was high bar where Guimaraes scored a 13.450 for the team. In the fifth rotation of the day, the Sooner put up a 13.800 on floor.
In the sixth and final rotation of day one in Rio, Guimaraes put up a 13.350 on pommel horse.
Vitaliy Guimaraes and his fellow members of Team USA will be competing in day two of the Pan American Championships Sunday, June 6 in Rio de Janeiro.
