The Highlands School District plans to bring students back to full in-person instruction, five days a week, for the start of the coming school year, according to the district’s revised covid health and safety plan.

All students, including those in pre-kindergarten, would have the option of participating in the district’s remote learning platform if they are uncomfortable returning in person.

The district ended the 2020-21 school year with students in schools four days a week, with one day of remote instruction. It also offered a fully online program, the Highlands Virtual Academy.

District spokeswoman Jennifer Goldberg could not say how many students were in each model, but said more families had opted for in-person learning.

The school board will review and approve the revised plan for the new school year during a special meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday. The meeting will be held virtually on Zoom. The link to attend and participate will be posted to the district’s website.

The board might act on other business during the meeting, a legal notification states.

The plan is available for review on the district’s site.

According to the plan, masks would be voluntary for all students and staff unless federal or state agencies put more restrictive requirements in place. However, physical distancing would still be maintained in classrooms and other school facilities to the maximum extent possible, and some physical distancing would be maintained on school buses, if feasible.

Students will be provided with their own personal computers to use throughout the school year.

“This technology is critical in case of a covid outbreak that requires a temporary shutdown,” the plan states.

After-school tutoring will be available to address students’ academic needs, and a program will support students experiencing a more significant learning loss because of the pandemic. Students with diagnosed learning disabilities will get additional support through the special education program.

Counseling and therapy services also will be available.

All students participating in full in-person instruction would continue to get free breakfast and lunch daily. In the event of a districtwide covid shutdown, the district will provide meals to all students.

Volunteers and nonessential personnel would be restricted from access to district facilities to prevent unnecessary exposure for students and staff, the plan states.
