TAMPA — The Bucs hit the field for the first day of training camp this morning with all 22 starters returning from last year’s Super Bowl winning team.
The Bucs have had 167 days off since winning the Super Bowl. But now the celebrations are over and it’s back to work. Which means, the quest to go back-to-back begins.
Head Coach Bruce Arians was impressed with what he saw from his team during the first day of training camp Sunday.
"The way the guys competed out there, their retention, was outstanding,” Arians said.
The playbook may be familiar. The faces are the same, but it’s a new season with new expectations.
"Don’t assume anything, your starting from scratch, that was last year’s team. This team, we can’t assume we know anything we have to go back to the beginning.”
On Tuesday the Bucs celebrated their Super Bowl win with a White House visit and then on Thursday, a ring ceremony in Tampa. Arians’ message today: it’s time to put last year behind them.
"It’s over, it’s over, that’s last year.”
Wide receiver Mike Evans says the team is embracing that philosophy.
"That has to be the mindset, you can’t get complacent,” Evans said. "We won last year, today starts a new season.”
But there’s still lessons to be learned from last year’s run.
“Learn more from the film we have from last year,” Arians explained.
Running back Leonard Fournette says the familiarity the players have with one another means the focus will be different.
"Putting the pieces together,” Fournette said. "We know we have a great offense, we have great players, but the biggest thing is staying consistent right now.”
The pads won’t go on for another week so in these first few days Arians is looking for speed of practice and execution.
"We have to emphasize the second half of practice in this heat because we talk about winning the second half of every game and they coincide. But pretty pleased with where we’re at.”
