Miami, Jul 31 (EFE).- Under the slogan “Down with the chains,” thousands of people gathered Saturday in Miami to demand freedom for Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela and expressed solidarity with people they say are repressed for opposing the countries’ ” dictatorships.”

Organized by Miami’s Mayor’s Office, the event brought together Cubans, Venezuelans, Nicaraguans and other Latin Americans in Bayfront Park displaying slogans such as “SOS Cuba,” “Homeland and life” and “Diaz Canel, surrender.”

The event was also attended by artists, politicians and leaders of exile organizations.

According to organizers, the purpose of the rally is to unite “in one voice” the communities of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua so that their “cry” reaches those who fight in those countries for freedom and know that they are not alone.

They said they wanted this “cry” to reach United States President Joe Biden in Washington to help people in these countries, according to some of the participating politicians.

“At this moment, Mr. President, you are either on the side of the Cuban people or the regime,” said Republican representative Mario Diaz Balart, of Cuban origin, from the stage.

Carlos Gimenez, also a member of the House of Representatives, republican and of Cuban origin, said the United States must be “the leader of freedom in the hemisphere.”

Although people had been asked to take precautions to prevent Covid-19 infections, many were without masks.

Before taking the stage, Gimenez and Díaz Balart spoke without a mask to the media in Bayfront Park to criticize Biden.

According to them, the president has not sided with the three countries that demand democracy but with the regimes that repress them and the measures that he has taken after the outbreak of the protests in Cuba on Jul. 11 are insufficient.

Biden announced more sanctions Friday against Cuba, this time against the police and two of its leaders, after the protests on Jul. 11, and met at the White House with representatives of the Cuban community in the US, including singer Yotuel and producer Emilio Estefan. EFE
