As the Olympics have continued, much of the buildup in the United States was for the nation's two biggest Olympic stars in gymnast Simone Biles and swimmer Katie Ledecky. But midway through the first full week of Olympic competition, both have found themselves at the opposite ends of the spectrum as it pertains to their fortunes in Tokyo.
Simone Biles
The biggest story of Olympic competition so far is the status of Simone Biles. After stumbling and eventual removing her self from the team final, Biles has now withdrawn from Thursday's all-around competition as well in order to "focus on her mental health." Biles will be replaced by Jade Carey, who finished ninth in qualifying.
In a statement by USA Gymnastics, the team announced that Biles would be evaluated daily in order to determine her status for next week's individual event finals. Biles had qualified for the finals on all four apparatuses.
"We wholeheartedly support Simone's decision and applaud her bravery in prioritizing her well-being," read USA Gymnastics' statement. "Her courage shows, yet again, why she is a role model for so many."
Katie Ledecky
Amid the drama surrounding Biles, fellow American Katie Ledecky charged forward to score a resounding victory for the United States in the women's 1500m freestyle final. After losing to Australia's Ariarne Titmus in 400m freestyle, Ledecky rebounded in incredible fashion by earning the sixth gold medal of her career in a dominant victory, finishing with a time of 15:37.34 and beating fellow American Erica Sullivan by over four seconds.
With her sixth career gold medal, Ledecky is now tied with Allyson Felix and Amy Van Dyken for the most all-time gold medals by an American woman. Only Jenny Thompson has more than eight.
Team USA Men's Basketball
After having their pride wounded in a loss to France, the U.S. Men's Basketball team go back on the right track with a dominant victory over Iran. The United States blew out Iran in complete and total fashion, winning by a score of 120-66. All 12 U.S. players scored at least four points, with Damian Lillard leading the team in scoring with 21. The U.S. shot 55 percent from the floor and 49 percent from beyond the arc.
With their win over Iran, the United States' next opponent will be the Czech Republic on Saturday as they look to advance from the group stage and into the knockout round.
Tennis
The biggest development out of men's tennis was Novak Djokovic advancing to the quarterfinals in men's singles. The top-ranked player in the world from Serbia defeated Alejandro Davidovich of Spain 6-3, 6-1 with nine aces, winning his 68th consecutive match and continuing his quest to become the second player to ever win a "Golden Slam" -- all four majors and the Olympics in the same year. The only player to ever achieve this feat is Steffi Graf, who did so in 1988. Djokovic can also become the third male player to ever achieve a Career Golden Slam, joining Andre Agassi and Rafael Nadal.
Djokovic's path to such distinctions won't be an easy one, as his opponent in the quarterfinals will be 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Kei Nishikori of Japan.
Men's Gymnastics
The men's gymnastics competition saw a three-peat for Japan in the all-around final, with Daiki Hashimoto earning gold after beating China's Xiao Ruoteng in the final rotation. This marks the third consecutive Olympics that Japan has won this competition, as Kohei Uchimara won the event in both 2012 and 2016.
After Ruoteng earned silver, Russia's Nikita Nagornyy took home bronze honors. Brody Malone was the highest-finishing American in 10th.
