July continues as “Freedom Month.” There are countless ways we keep our  personal freedom strong, as well as ways we stay imprisoned. We either allow ourselves to be victims of circumstances, or affirm our right to be free of personal fears.

Yes, I do read Amy Dickinson’s column. Sometimes I learn a new tool how to handle an annoying or alarming circumstance. I also note parents who are afraid to chastise or correct a son or daughter for fear of losing their love, or those who feel sorry for themselves when friends or family members don’t offer “help” when it’s needed. These are but two wake-up calls for those who feel less than free, jailed by fear.

Many parents feel hesitant putting their foot down if a grown son or daughter continually abuses a privilege they were afforded when they were small children. By 18 or 20, if never before corrected, they’re now accustomed doing whatever they choose. Remember the saying about closing the barn door after the horse is stolen.

As for feeling sorry because no one is helping out — have you asked for help?

I’ve been known in the past to be a now-and-then-believer in clairvoyance: “Gee, the kids didn’t see that I was a bit overwhelmed.” I learned it wasn’t always the kids’ fault that they saw me as the handle-it-mom type. They didn’t get it that I needed a bit more help at times. Don’t make my mistake and rely on them to be psychics. Ask for assistance.

Feeling sorry for ourselves in these instances is a waste of precious time as well as adding unnecessary stress. As Ernest Holmes, Founder of “The Science of Mind,” taught: “The seed of freedom must be planted in the innermost being of each one of us, but like the Prodigal Son, we must make that great discovery for ourselves.” And adding my two-cents, don’t abuse it.

You are some part of Divine Intelligence, Creator of the Universe. Use that part to guide and lead you safely on your pathway to freedom.

The Rev. Patricia Ballard is pastor of the Oroville Center for Spiritual Living.
