ELKINS — Local officials are working together to offer kids a special day to get out of the house and have fun — and learn something at the same time.
The Randolph County Family Resource Network will hosting a day filled with activities for families during the 17th annual National Kids Day on Saturday, Aug. 14.
The event will take place at the Phil Gainer Community Center, and is designed to provide an opportunity for every local parent and grandparent to take a break from the daily pressures of life to celebrate and renew their commitment to their children.
“We wanted to do this to promote parents and grandparents spending more time with their children,” Randolph County Family Resource Network Director Gillian Adams told The Inter-Mountain. “With COVID things have been pretty hectic so we are wanting to provide fun and free things for families to do together here at the center.”
The event, which will run from 10 a.m. until noon Aug. 14, will feature carnival games, inflatable obstacle courses, race cars, crafts, door prizes, free giveaways, treats and much more. All of the activities are open and free for children of all ages.
“We are happy to support the Family Resource Network every summer as they bring this awesome event to the children of Elkins,” Phil Gainer Community Center Manager Chris Lee said. “It’s a great opportunity for folks to bring the young ones out for some good, free, family fun, while also learning more about what kind of activities are available to the youth in our region.”
This event is sponsored, in part, by funding from area businesses and agencies, and is organized by the Randolph County FRN.
National Kids Day was created by the children’s crisis charity KidsPeace to give America an opportunity to celebrate childhood; to demonstrate our commitment to nurturing children; to inspire our nation, our communities, and our families to love and appreciate children; and to prepare our children for a healthy, happy, successful future.

The goals of National Kids Day are to create awareness of children’s value and needs year-round by focusing on a yearly celebration on the national calendar, to change the way America looks at and treats its children, and to create a world where children can find safety, love, trust and the freedom to grow and be a child.
