Six Flags New England will fully open on Fourth of July weekend after a thunderstorm closed the park for two days of cleanup.
“It was essential that we could open our park for our biggest holiday weekend,” said Jennifer McGrath, Six Flags spokesperson. “I want to reassure the public, what transpired over the last 48 hours does not impact a thing.”
Over 100 rides and attractions will be open this holiday weekend. The only ride currently expected to be closed tomorrow is Fireball, which was hit by trees during the storm. The Six Flags website will be updated if any other attractions close.
Independence Day weekend will feature beloved traditions like the yearly fireworks and new ones including the Coca-Cola July 4th Fest, which will have numerous special attractions including a DJ, free giveaways, photo opportunities and special food offerings.
“When I kind of think nostalgia of United States of America, I think theme parks or carnivals or fairs, and that’s that’s the iconic American experience,” McGrath said.
What was unique about this storm was how widespread it was, McGrath said, with over a dozen trees falling in addition to countless branches scattered around the park. Videos of flooding surfaced online, which McGrath said is “very, very rare” due to the park’s draining system.
Six Flags New England employs more than 3,000 people every year and the company takes pride in its maintenance team who have accumulated more than 1,000 years of experience, McGrath said as numerous carts and truck drove by for park clean up.
“Safety is top of mind, first, last and always in everything that we do for our guests,” McGrath said. “We have an amazing safety and security team that really upholds to the highest of standards.”
McGrath added that the closure was not the park’s fault, rather a measure to ensure safety moving forward. Every ride has been tested in a visual, audible, multi-checkpoint inspection by the maintenance crew.
The closure was not ideal for Six Flags. After the pandemic closed the park for the majority of the last year, they thrilled to be open with guests again.
“I think we want to show that we’re back, we’re strong, we’re proud. We’re so thankful that families bonded together and got through this together. It’s a celebration, this is a big event for us. We want people to come into Six Flags Over the Fourth Fest holiday experience and maybe be that takeaway we’ve needed for a while,” McGrath said. “I am getting a little choked up because it’s just been so long since families have had fun.”
Those with questions about the park are encouraged to ask them on the Six Flags New England website 24 hours a day.
“It’s unfortunate what transpired,” McGrath said. “But it was two days and it’s what we had to do and you can tell we’re an engine that’s running.”
