BLACKSBURG, Va. – After opening the Virginia Tech Invitational with a 3-0 loss to Toledo earlier in the day, Elon University volleyball bounced back with a 3-1 win over Lehigh on Friday, Aug. 27 at Cassell Coliseum.

"We came out really strong in our first match this morning," head coach Mary Tendler said after the win. "Then our serve receive and defense started to break down and we did not recover. We did a much better job of pushing back in the second match. The players did a great job of bouncing back in the fourth set against Lehigh to get our first win."

The Phoenix (1-1) came out strong in the first set as a Julia Crabtree kill capped off a 5-0 run that put Elon ahead to 8-3. The Rockets (1-0) were able to close the gap at 9-7, but Haylie Clark set up Natalie Cummins for a score to start an 8-2 swing that sent Toledo back to its bench. The break worked out for UT as they scored nine unanswered to wrestle away control at 23-20. Elon was able to pull even at 23-23 and again at 24-24, but the Rockets earned the next two points for the 26-24 decision.

With Set Two knotted at 6-6, UT went off on a 9-1 run and never looked back. A service error gave the Phoenix some hope at 20-17, but a 4-0 run helped the Rockets to a 25-18 tally and a 2-0 match lead. The third set also saw Toledo take an early lead. After Leah Daniel and Cummins recorded a block for the first point of the set, the Rockets took off with another 9-1 run and would push their lead to 14-4. Kills from Daniel and Sydney Love and a service ace by Jenn Krzeminski got the Phoenix to within 22-16, but UT closed out the set 25-16 to claim the match.

Daniel finished with a team-high 11 kills, was second in digs with seven and added one block assist. Cummins and Love added five kills each, Clark collected 28 assists with one service ace, and Krzeminski served two aces. Neither side could pull away in the opening set. Daniel assisted Ericka Link to tie the score at 10-10, and Link then set up Clark for a kill for another tie at 11-11. However, a pair of Lehigh attack errors and kills from Love and Daniel gave the Phoenix control at 16-12. Later in the set, Cummins converted an attack and Daniel followed with an ace to help build a 21-15 advantage, and scores from Krzeminski and Love helped cap off the 25-18 decision with a 3-0 run.

Elon continued the attack in the next two, scoring the first five points to build a 7-2 lead. The Mountain Hawks (0-2) would catch back up at 8-8 and the set became a seesaw battle until Kellyn Trowse put away a set by Link to put the Phoenix back in front, 19-18. The play began a 7-2 run as Elon pulled ahead 2-0 with a 25-20 tally.

Lehigh was finally able to secure a set point with a 25-17 response in Set Three. Both teams traded runs early in the fourth set, which turned into another back-and-forth affair. However, Daniel and Clark were able to create some space as the pair netted three points for a 23-20 lead. Elon and Lehigh then traded points before Clark assisted Trowse for the match point at 25-22.
