Reminiscing on the best Colorado Avalanche game-day traditions - Mile High Hockey

With the lull in Colorado Avalanche news recently, I figured we’d spice it up and change things a little bit. Let’s take a break from our T25U25 playlist and go back to a simpler time...

Picture this Avs fans: you’re walking up to the main entrance of Ball Arena, ready for a great night of hockey. There might be a promotional product being handed out as you get your ticket scanned. You head up the escalators to the main level and spot some ice out of the corner of your eye, glistening in the light and wanting your attention.

Even if it’s your first time or one thousandth time, it never gets old. Once you get up to your seat, there might be some white pom-poms to cover the seats in an Avalanche white come playoff season. There are warmups happening, with the playlist on the screen for the audience to listen to and watch players skate on the ice. Gabriel Landeskog does his traditional puck toss in the air and successfully catches it on his blade, allowing him to then throw it up into the stands.

Maybe you’ll get some food and alcohol in hand for those of age, maybe a soda for the younger ones. You get comfy and wait for Jake Schroeder to sing the National Anthem and scream “And the flag was still there!” at the top of your lungs.

Finally, the puck is dropped and we’re underway. You’ll get the occasional “Let’s go Avs!” chant ringing around the arena and sing and dance to some great tunes during the stoppage of play. When there’s a power play, everyone shouts “dilly dilly!” as the penalized player sits in the box.

The Avs score! The horn blares and rains of white pom-poms fill the air in playoff season. Everyone is cheering, clapping, hugging one another while chanting “hey hey hey!” You’ll be screeching “whoop whoop!” after the goal call by Alan Roache.

Fast forward to the beginning of the third period, when arguably the best team entrance to start a period begins. The arena goes dark, you grab your phone and shine your flashlight down to lighten the pitch-black arena. The ice projections shine bright and beat along to the entrance of “Baba O’Riley” to bring the Avs out on the ice.

With a win just minutes away, it’s time to serenade the arena with a wonderful tune. You immediately recognize it: the drumming entrance of “All the Small Things.” Loud and proud, everyone around gets their singing voice going, ready for the chorus of “Say it ain’t so! I will not go! Turn the lights off! Carry me home!” with plenty of off-tune na-na-na’s to follow. If the San Jose Sharks just so happen to be in town, a rendition of “Baby Shark” may not be far behind either.

The Avs come off with the dub, and the Star Wars music enters the arena to recognize the three stars of the game. If Nathan MacKinnon just so happens to be the first star, during the interview there’ll be rains of “MVP!” chants coming down on #29. With that, the lights come on and it’s time to head home from another wonderful Avalanche experience.

All 18,000 that can fit into Ball Arena will have a ball (no pun intended) hosting these game-day traditions altogether as one very soon this upcoming just a little over a month away. We cannot wait, and I’m sure you can’t either.
