The upward trajectory continues. The state is averaging 1,763 new cases and 12 new deaths per day over the last week, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.

This is up from a seven-day average of 1,339 cases a week ago, on Aug. 18, and the highest the number has been since May 15.

Every reporting period since June 28, the seven-day average has increased, and Monday saw the highest percent positive tests for a single day since early May.

There were 4,326 new, confirmed coronavirus cases - an average of 2,163 a day - and 38 confirmed COVID-19 deaths reported in Michigan Tuesday, Aug. 24, and Wednesday, Aug. 25.

Of the new deaths reported Wednesday, 10 were identified in a review of death certificates, done three times a week, and the case count represents new referrals of confirmed cases to the Michigan Disease Surveillance System since the last web update on Monday, Aug. 23.

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 937,720 reported coronavirus cases and 20,161 confirmed deaths. Additionally, the state has reported 112,433 probable cases and 1,285 probable deaths, in which a physician and/or antigen test ruled it COVID-19 but no confirmatory PCR test, which detects the presence of a virus, was done.

Of Michigan’s 83 counties, 82 reported new cases Tuesday and/or Wednesday.

Only Keweenaw County, where about 2,100 people live at the top of the Upper Peninsula, saw no new cases.

Wayne County topped the list with 793 new cases. It was followed by Oakland with 619, Macomb with 383 and Kent with 288. Ottawa (187), Kalamazoo (180), Genesee (114), Saginaw (98), Livingston (91) and Washtenaw (86) rounded out the top 10.

Twenty-five counties reported at least one death in the last two days. Wayne led with eight. Oakland had three. Berrien, Genesee, Ingham, Livingston and Muskegon counties had two. One was reported in each of Allegan, Bay, Calhoun, Cass, Clare, Emmet, Gratiot, Houghton, Jackson, Kent, Leelanau, Lenawee, Macomb, Monroe, Saginaw, Sanilac, Shiawassee and St. Clair counties.

As of Tuesday, the number of eligible people who have received at least a single dose of COVID-19 vaccine ticked up to 60%. To look at immunization rates by county, view the chart below. Leelanau represents the most vaccinated county; Cass is the least vaccinated. Emmet County and Wayne County (minus Detroit) are nearing 70%. of the eligible population vaccinated. As of Wednesday, Hospitals statewide were treating 1,235 patients with confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19, with 274 58 patients in the ICU. Of those hospitalized, 26 are children. That’s up from 944 a week ago, on Aug. 18, when there were 232 patients in the ICU.

On Aug. 16, there were 925 patients and 216 patients in the ICU.

Of the 28,369 diagnostic tests processed on Tuesday, Aug. 24, 8.2% came back positive for SARS-CoV-2. The seven-day average is now 8.6%, slightly down from 8.8% on Aug. 18.

The percent positive on Monday, Aug. 23, was 11.1%, the highest single day percentage since May 3.

The chart below shows new cases for the past 30 days based on onset of symptoms. In this chart, numbers for the most recent days are incomplete because of the lag time between people getting sick and getting a confirmed coronavirus test result, which can take up to a week or more.

The seven-day average of deaths in Michigan is 12. It is down from a seven-day average of 13 on Aug. 18 and has been fewer than 20 since June.
