Press Release
Flint, MI: Juneteenth is the oldest, nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordan Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas, with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free.

The word "Harambee" literally means, "all pull together" and comes from Keyna's national language, Swahili. In Freedom School, Harambee is how we start our day. It is a time of singing, dancing, cheering, chanting, and positive affirmations. We want this

even to celebrate who we are as African American people, highlight other events happening throughout the day, and encourage our children, their parents and the Flint community to "pull together" to make this city, state, country, and world a better place for all of its citizens. We will welcome Isaia Oliver, President & CEO of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, as our read aloud guest and look forward to fostering positive interactions and unity.

This event will take place on Juneteenth, Friday, June 19th on an outside site at Bertons Field House, 3300 Saginaw St, Flint, MI, beginning at 10:00 a.m. ending no later than 12:00 noon.
