Freedom, Inc. protest organizers reflect on week of action - WKOW

MADISON (WKOW) -- Just over a week ago, Freedom, Inc. and other groups organized the first march in Madison against police brutality and honoring George Floyd.

Ever since, daily demonstrations have taken to the streets of the city and organizers say their actions have been a success.

"We saw many people who were not already activated in the movement who became activated," M Adams, Co-Executive Director of Freedom, Inc., said.

She says their week of action had three goals: de-funding police, community control of police and the freeing of inmates from Dane County Jail.

"One of those things related to our demand of de-funding the police is taking those resources and reinvesting them into black affirming institutions," Adams said.

She says their demonstrations have allowed them to have discussions with city leaders, like Mayor Satya Rhodes Conway, and they've made promises that they plan on holding them to.

"She said that her office will seek to redirect resources to institutions led by the black community that are based in restorative and transformative value systems," Adams said.

Adams says while it may seem like a daunting task, she can see change coming soon.

"Considering some of the work that's happening, yes, I am optimistic and encouraged that we will be able to begin to dig at the root of some of these hundreds of years old systems that cause harm to black folks," she said.

Their next immediate goal is trying to get rid of school resource officers in Madison's school district.

"We can see in Minneapolis and other school districts across the country that people are wisening up and realizing we shouldn't be allowing people authorized to use deadly force into our schools if we want to promote a healthy learning environment," Adams said.

But she also said major change for the black community hasn't come without major movements and resistance, so their work isn't done after just a week.

"Right now we're having to remind people that that was a week of action, that wasn't the only action," she said.

Freedom, Inc. will not be releasing a timeline of potential future activities, but they'll announce any events on their social media pages.
