Cubs pitcher José Quintana played catch on Thursday for the first time since he underwent microscopic surgery on his left thumb two weeks ago.

“Things seemed to feel good for him today at 60 feet,” Cubs manager David Ross said. “I talked to him. There’s still a pretty big scar on there, and he said the feeling was good. He could press on the area, and it had good sensation.”

That’s something the Cubs will be monitoring as Quintana progresses through injury rehabilitation. The left-hander sliced his thumb while washing dishes less than three weeks ago. He had five stitches to close the laceration initially, but microscopic surgery revealed a cut sensory nerve in his thumb. That was repaired during the same operation.

Quintana began his flat-ground throwing program on Thursday and will build up distance before eventually throwing off a mound.

“He’s all smiles,” Ross said. “He’s good energy around here, and we enjoy his presence in the clubhouse.”

Even before he was cleared to throw, Quintana was working out at Wrigley Field to retain strength, which could ease his road back to the field. But Ross declined to estimate when Quintana will return.

Said Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer: “I’m hoping for the best with him, and he’s such a competitor, and he’s going to do every right thing to get back. But at some point, it’s going to come down to how he feels the ball. Throwing today is not a good way to assess that.

“I think that we’re probably not going to have a feel for that until he gets off a mound and is throwing all his pitches. And the margin for error pitching in a Major League game is really small. So, I think we won’t find out just how he feels, as far as the sensory part of his thumb, probably until he gets much further along.”

Depth was already a concern for the Cubs’ starting rotation, and Quintana’s injury only exacerbated that point of vulnerability. Swingman Alec Mills is expected to fill the open spot in the rotation while Quintana is out.
