Jacob Griessel threw nine passes last season for Campolindo, completing two of them.
Fifteen months later, he’s polished and explosive.
The senior stepped into the starting role and threw four touchdown passes in a long-awaited season opener Friday night as Campolindo rallied multiple times to beat Freedom 27-23 in Oakley.
Freedom did not trail until Griessel connected with Maxwell Weaver from 42 yards out with eight minutes to go. The touchdown erased a 23-20 deficit.
Freedom led 6-0, 13-6, 20-12 and 23-20. But on each occasion, Griessel responded.
His 51-yard pass to Max Heffernan evened the score 6-6 and a 5-yard scoring pass to Weaver pulled Campolindo — ranked 11th by the Bay Area News Group — to within 13-12. (The two-point play failed).
With Freedom ahead 20-12, Griessel threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Joey Schmidt and then a two-point pass to Weaver to tie the score 20-20.
Freedom reclaimed the lead with a field goal, only to watch Griessel connect with Weaver again for the decisive touchdown.
Sacred Heart Prep 49, Aragon 12
Teddy Purcell threw three touchdown passes and Andrew Latu ran for three touchdowns to lead Sacred Heart Prep to a dominant season-opening victory in San Mateo.
Paul Barton was on the receiving end of two of Purcell’s touchdown throws.
