EAST GREENSBORO – Many things went well for the North Carolina A&T volleyball team Friday afternoon.

The best thing is that they defeated the South Carolina State Bulldogs in three sets (25-13, 16, 9) at Moore Gymnasium. The win gave the Aggies their eighth straight victory as they improved to 8-1 overall and 8-0 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).

Finally, the Aggies honored five outstanding ladies as a part of Senior Day in setter Edie Brewer, outside hitters Fatimah Shabazz and Courteney Pitt, middle blocker Tasmyn Fahey and defensive specialist Milanna Morgan

Despite all the good fortunes, N.C. A&T head coach Hal Clifton is looking forward to helping his team get better.

"We were able to pull out the win, but I don't think we played our best," Clifton said. "However, it's always nice to give your seniors a victory on Senior Day. We need to clean up some things, so we will get back in the gym Monday and get to work.'

The Aggies posted a .300 hitting percentage and held the Bulldogs (0-6, 0-6 MEAC) to a negative -.030 hitting percentage. But N.C. A&T's Friday hitting percentage was the lowest against the Bulldogs this season, and the Bulldogs scored more points on Friday than they have scored against the Aggies all season.

Even though N.C. A&T may not have been at their sharpest; their wins were still overall convincing. The Aggies used four service aces to win Set 1. The Aggies jumped out to a 9-4 lead before increasing their lead to 14-4 behind two Pitt kills.

N.C. A&T took its biggest lead of the set, 19-6, on a service error from Maya Rembert. Junior Amalie Rupertova closed out the set with a kill.

In a usual twist for the four-match series this season, the Bulldogs actually took the lead in the second set. They led 6-3 before two kills from Brewer and another from Pitt helped the Aggies tie the set at 7. An Aggies service error gave the Bulldogs the lead back as the two teams went back-and-forth until Fahey gave the Aggies the lead for good with a kill set up by Brewer.

Fahey's kill led to an 8-1 that gave the Aggies an 18-11 lead. SCSU did get to within four, 19-15, on a block assist from Rembert and Destanie Aydt. But a 6-1 run fueled by two Shabazz kills ended the set. Shabazz had six kills on 12 total attacks and committed only two attack errors in the set. Brewer had four kills on six total attacks and did not commit an attack error in Set 2.

The Aggies looked most impressive in the third set. They put together a .421 hitting percentage, and six different players recorded kills in the set led by sophomore Mallory Porcher's three. The Aggies also had eight aces in the third set, led by junior Nadia Montalban-El Hiriche with four. Montalban-El Hiriche scored on three straight aces to give the Aggies a 7-1 lead.

Brewer extended the Aggies lead to 19-6 on an ace. The lead went to 14, 23-9 on a Porche kill. The set and match ended on an attack error by Jess Beanard.

Shabazz had double-figure kills for the eighth time this season as she finished with 10. Fahey ended the afternoon with seven kills, one attack error and a .667 hitting percentage. Brewer had five kills, no attack errors and a .556 hitting percentage to go along with 20 assists. Junior Andrea Laboy-Rivera finished with 14 digs.

The Aggies next scheduled match is at 4 p.m., Friday, March 26, at East Carolina.
