WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - For the first time in two years, teams took to the pitch at South High for the annual Titan Classic. Day one is in the books with the blue bracket wrapping up play. The red bracket will get going Tuesday night.
In the early contest, Kapaun Mt. Carmel’s Hadlie Lowe had a big day to lead her Crusaders past Dodge City. Lowe got an assist on an early goal from Taylor Nye for a 1-0 lead, then later in the half she deposited her first score of the contest.
She wasn’t finished, adding two more in the second half, one of those greatly aided by the heavy winds across the area Monday. The ball hung in the air, changing directions before bouncing over the keeper’s head. A short time later she earned the hat trick with a shot that deflected in off a Demon defender. Freshman Mayra Nichols finished the scoring for KMC to push them to the semifinal round, 5-0.
Later in the evening, Maize sent four first half goals home, part of a 5-0 win of the own to move on to face Kapaun in Wednesday’s semifinal.
It was a team effort for the Eagles, with Elyce Pfeiffer getting things started just sneaking a ball past the keeper early in the half. Minutes later, Haley Rogers delivered a cross to senior captain Mina Chapman who made it a 2-0 Maize lead.
Anjolina Schmidt and Claire Morgan each added first half goals of their own, with Schmidt getting a second late in the match to secure a brace in the clean sheet victory.
The bottom half of the bracket started with Bishop Carroll continuing their strong start to the year 8-0 winners over Liberal. The Golden Eagles found the back of the net twice in the opening half, with both Khloe Schuckman and Ella Esfeld fighting the windy conditions for a 2-0 halftime lead.
It didn’t take long for the Golden Eagles to take advantage of having the wind at their back in the second half, Schuckman needing just 23 seconds to get it to a 3-0 lead. Fellow senior Anna Lasak followed her up to make it 4-0 with less than five minutes gone in the half. Grace Long, Claire Weber, Destiny Hoy and Brianna Raya all added second half goals as well.
Finally, Derby finished off Heights in the lone game on the day to not end in a shutout, a 5-1 Panther win to bounce back from a season opening loss to Northwest.
Sophomore Ciana Tovar started things out with a goal off a deflection, the first of her high school career, and a short time later Kirsten Bourgeois made it two Panther sophomores getting the scoring started.
Cyerra Boyer, Faith Abou-Faissal and Logan Riley all contributed goals for the Panthers who will now take on Bishop Carroll in Wednesday’s semifinal round.
