UNION, Ky. - Playing as an individual, sophomore Preston Nanthavong carded an opening round, 4-under 67 at NKU's The Jewell on Monday (Mar. 29) and is tied for second among the 35-player field. The IUPUI team shot an opening round 295 and is tied for fourth of the six teams. Wright State tops the field at 9-under 275 and Thomas More is second at 4-over 288.

Nanthavong started his day with back-to-back bogeys but was brilliant from there, playing the final 16 holes to 6-under. He made an eagle on the par-5, No. 15 and then followed with a birdie on No. 16 to get to 4-under.

"To start the day, I was a bit nervous and made some silly mistakes, but after seeing Kevin and Enrico make a couple birdies at the start, it really got me going," Nanthavong said. "I hit the ball really well and I just felt like and I just felt like I was able to play free and patient.

"I just took it one shot at a time and tried to play every shot with confidence. I still feel like I left some shots out there, but that gives me confidence going into tomorrow."

The IUPUI lineup started slowly but finished strong to finish the round at 295.

Keegan McCullough made two late birdies to get to 1-over 72 and Matthew Baxter also finished strong, playing his final six holes to 1-under to get to 2-over 73. Freshman Brock Aten had two birdies in his final four holes and closed at 3-over 74 and Taylor Gardner played his back nine at 1-over to end his day at 5-over 76.

"The top five guys finished off well after a rough start," assistant coach Vince Drahman said. "We're hoping to carry that momentum in tomorrow. Our individuals played some good golf today. It's great to see Preston with a chance to win heading into the final round."

Freshman Kevin Tillery made the most of his collegiate debut with a 1-over 72. He was 1-under after a birdie on No. 12, but gave back a pair of shots with a double on the short, par-4 No. 14.

Wright State's Mikkel Mathiesen leads the field at 6-under 65 while Nanthavong is tied with WSU's Cameron Willis at 4-under. Tuesday's final round will begin just after 8:00 a.m.
