FARMVILLE, Va. – In their final home game of the 2021 spring season, Longwood women's soccer made sure to leave a lasting impression.
Powered by two goals and an assist from sophomore forward Kiersten Yuhas, the Lancers (4-0-3, 4-0-3 Big South) capped an undefeated home season with their highest-scoring game of the year and remained unbeaten in the Big South with a 4-0 rout of visiting Winthrop Sunday afternoon at the Longwood Athletics Complex.
In a coming out party that was Longwood's first multi-goal game by a Lancer this season, Yuhas punched in Longwood's first two goals of the game before the 20-minute mark and followed up with an assist on another first-half strike by sophomore classmate Catharine Forst before halftime. The goals were her first of the season, while the assist was her fourth as the Lancers finished their 2021 home slate a perfect 4-0.
"Most important is that we got a win on Senior Day," said Longwood head coach Todd Dyer. "It was also nice to score an early goal and a few more after that to relieve some of the pressure we've had to deal with playing in so many tight games."
Building on Longwood's 3-0 halftime lead Sunday, Longwood freshman Isabella Unrath added an exclamation point in the 88th minute with a breakaway goal set up by a nearly field-length pass from classmate Mikayla Schuetz. That strike punctuated Longwood's first four-goal outburst since a 4-0 win at Hampton Sept. 25, 2019, and the first such home win since a 5-1 win over Hampton on Oct. 3, 2018.
Those four goals propped up a combined three-save shutout from senior goalkeeper Madison Van Dyke and junior understudy Jordan Horacek, who stopped the only three shots Longwood's backline allowed the Eagles.
Van Dyke, on Senior Day alongside her eight classmates – Camryn Conklin, Kennedy Culbreath, Madison Hommey, Madison Lockamy, Emily Mothersbaugh, Hannah Panagos, Carrie Reaver and Kai Sizemore – made the first two of those stops before yielding to Horacek in the 70th minute. It was the fifth shutout of the season for the All-Big South goalkeeper Van Dyke and secured her 16th career win, which ranks fifth on Longwood's all-time Division I leaderboard.
Also getting in on the senior day celebration were Culbreath and Lockamy, who both registered assists. Culbreath's came on Yuhas' second goal, while Lockamy came on the setup pass on the two-assist goal from Forst in the 27th minute.
"Another shutout reflects our commitment and ability to defend as a team," Dyer said. "A big thanks to our senior for all their hard work these past four years. We have two games to go, and we're ready to fight for one of those four tournament sports."
The Lancers now enter their most challenging stretch of the 2021 season, with their final two regular-season games against the two teams they're battling for top-three spots in the league standings. The first of those comes this Saturday, April 3, when Commonwealth rival and second-place Radford (5-2-1, 4-2-1 Big South) hosts 4 p.m. kickoff and a rematch of a regular-season matchup Longwood took 1-0 last season. The last, and the Big South finale, will pit the Lancers against first-place High Point (7-0, 6-0 Big South), as a showdown between what are currently the lone remaining unbeaten teams in the Big South.
