Scott Dixon turned the fastest lap of the week – 233.302 mph – with elevated boost levels on Fast Friday, the final full day of practice before Crown Royal Armed Forces Qualifying Weekend. The four-car Chip Ganassi Racing team of Dixon, Marcus Ericsson, Alex Palou and Tony Kanaan took four of the top five spots on Friday. Team Penske, which owns 18 Indy 500 wins, did not fare as well. The fastest driver on Friday was Josef Newgarden (22nd), followed by rookie Scott McLaughlin (24th), Will Power (29th) and Simon Pagenaud (30th).
"A good (qualifying) day for me would be in the top 15," 2018 Indy 500 winner Will Power said Saturday during the final practice session before qualifying.
Honda has had a clear advantage in the previous three days of Indy 500 practice, and Chevy teams are concerned. Looking at last year's results, eight of the Fast Nine drivers drove Hondas (Ed Carpenter Racing's Rinus Veekay broke through and started fourth), and 11 of the top 15 finishers in the 104th running were Hondas.
“There's always surprises,” Andretti Autosport's Alexander Rossi said when asked to predict qualifying. “I think this year has proved that correctly across all the races, right? How many races have we had, four or five? Five races, five winners. I think that's a testament to the series, the level of all these teams and guys. The guy that's going to be on pole is really anyone's guess.”
