The Awesome Holiday Weekend Continues
The very nice weather for the holiday will continue on your Sunday as we’ll have a nice cool and dry flow over the area from the north that will keep us mild and comfortable. Afternoon highs will be in the lower 70s to the lower 80s across the area from northwest to southeast.
While the morning will start off rather cool on your Memorial Day, temperatures will quickly warm during the morning and into the mid-afternoon hours. Skies will be mainly sunny and highs will top out in the lower 80s to the lower 90s across the area from northwest to southeast.
Welcome to the Start of Meteorological Summer
A system will start to develop off to our west on Tuesday, the first day of Meteorological Spring, that will help bring slightly higher moisture levels to Central Alabama. At this point, we look to stay dry, but humidity and heat levels will be rising. Skies will be partly to mostly cloudy with highs reaching the mid-80s to the lower 90s.
As that system moves closer to the area on Wednesday, the advection of moisture from the south will get a little stronger, just enough where we could see a few isolated showers and storms develop during the main heating of the day. Highs will top out in the mid-80s to the lower 90s once again.
The system moves into the area on Thursday, which will bring mostly cloudy skies with showers and thunderstorms likely throughout the day mainly for the northern half of the area, while chances will be much lower for the southern half. Highs will range from the lower 80s in the northwest to near or right at 90 degrees in the southeast.
Not much change for Friday as plenty of moisture will continue to be available over Central Alabama along with the higher possibility of scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms, especially along and north of I-20. Highs will range throughout the 80s across the area as temperatures will be slightly cooler where showers happen to fall.
Showers & Storms Possible Next Weekend
At this point, the first weekend of June continues to be very warm and humid across the area with showers and storms possible. Saturday looks to have the higher chances of rain of the two days, but there will be a decent chance of scattered showers & storms on Sunday as well. Saturday’s highs will be in the lower 80s to the lower 90s. Sunday’s highs look to be in the upper 80s to the lower 90s.
Update on the Tropics
As of 10 pm CDT on Saturday, tropical cyclone formation is not expected during the next 5 days across the North Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico.
On This Day in Weather History
1879 – A major outbreak of severe weather occurred in Kansas and western Missouri. In Kansas, tornadoes killed eighteen persons at Delphos, and thirty persons at Irving. Two tornadoes struck the town of Irving within a few minutes’ time virtually wiping the small Kansas community off the map. The second tornado was perhaps two miles wide and exhibited multiple vortices.
