After a year’s hiatus for the pandemic, the Morris County Commissioners on Wednesday resumed their tradition of honoring area veterans ahead of Memorial Day.
The ceremony was livestreamed from the lawn of the Morris County Courthouse, where a small crowd of dignitaries watched officials bestow medals to William O’Connor of Morristown, Sara Vasso (represented by her husband) of Morris Township, George Macchia of Chatham, Joseph Ellis of Lake Hopatcong, Evan Ruggiero of Parsippany and Christopher Anderson of Mt. Arlington.
Their biographies are here.

Also remembered, in remarks by Commissioner Director Stephen Shaw, was Amabel Scharff Roberts, a Madison native who was the first borough resident, and the first American nurse, to die in World War I.
“Because of the turmoil America suffered this past year with the pandemic, we thought it fitting to look back on the selflessness and heroism” of Roberts, Shaw said. An American Legion Post was named for Roberts in 1937.
Vivyen Ray, an Army veteran who works for the County College of Morris, recounted a pair of inspiring salutes during her keynote.
Capt. Robert McNally of the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office played Amazing Grace on the bagpipes, and Korean War veteran and National Drum Corps Hall of Famer Michael J. Del Vecchio performed Taps on his bugle.
In addition to the county commissioners, dignitaries in the audience included Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-7th Dist.), a staff member for Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-11th Dist.), state Sen. Anthony M. Bucco (R-25th Dist.), Assemblywoman Aura Dunn (R-25th Dist.) and Morris Sheriff James Gannon.
More than 10,000 medals have been presented to Morris veterans in recognition of their service since 2000.
