MARSHALL — A year after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, communities in southwest Minnesota are now able to gather again, including for Memorial Day observances. Area cities that canceled community programs or had stricter social distancing guidelines last year are for the most part going back to more traditional Memorial Day services.
In Marshall, the Memorial Day program will still look a little different from local tradition, due to other circumstances. Ongoing street construction is limiting parking and access to the band shell at Liberty Park, so Memorial Day observances will be held at the veterans memorial at Memorial Park on Main Street, said Hal Meyer of the Marshall American Legion post. There isn’t seating available at Memorial Park, so the program will be briefer than in past years, he said.
The program at Memorial Park will start at 10:30 a.m. Monday. Before that, members of the Marshall American Legion and VFW posts will conduct Memorial Day ceremonies at local cemeteries. Services will be held at the Lynd Cemetery at 8 a.m., at the Green Valley Cemetery at 8:30 a.m., at the Marshall Cemetery at 9 a.m., and at Calvary Catholic Cemetery at 9:30 a.m.
