BUFFALO – The Northern Illinois University softball team split the weekend set with Buffalo after taking Sunday's finale from the Bulls at Nan Harvey Field on Sunday afternoon.
A four-run fourth helped propel the Huskies (17-27, 11-17) to a 7-5 win over Buffalo (16-29, 14-16).
The Bulls opened up a 5-1 lead through the first three innings, with NIU's run, a leadoff solo homer by Sam Mallinder to left center, coming in the second inning.
NIU tied the game in the top of the fourth following a three-run third by Buffalo with three runs coming via the long ball. Again, Mallinder led off the inning with a solo shot to left center. Two batters later with a runner on first and no outs, Kira Mickelson blasted a two-run shot to left center as well.
Mallinder led the way for Huskie line up, going 3-for-4, including two home runs, scoring twice and driving in two runs from the five hole. Amberly Rodriguez and Kara Apato each went 3-for-4 with a run scored.
Later in the frame, with runners at first and second, Katie Keller doubled to center field to drive in Courtney James from second to tie the contest, 5-5.
The Huskies took the lead in the top of the sixth. With runners on second and third with two outs, Izzy Smith came through with a bases clearing single through the right side.
Mackenzie Bryan, who came in to pitch with two outs in the bottom of the third, kept the Bulls off the board the final two innings to secure the win and improve to 4-4 on the season.
"Sam [Mallinder] had an incredible day at the plate today," NIU head coach Christina Sutcliffe. "She had a plan and stuck with it perfectly. Izzy [Smith] came up clutch while Kenzie [Bryan] held them down late."
