DeKALB, IL – The Northern Illinois University baseball team wrapped up the home portion of its 2021 season on Sunday afternoon, falling 4-1 to the Toledo Rockets at Ralph McKinzie Field.

Prior to the game, the Huskies honored the 14 seniors on this year's team – Ryan Anderson (Palatine, Ill.), Jake Dunham (Plainfield, Ill.), Brendan Joyce (South Elgin, Ill.), Parker Kirkpatrick (Lawrence, Kan.), Jordan Larson (Dodgeville, Wis.), Dylan Lonteen (Peoria, Ill.), Matt McCumber (Cary, Ill.), Tristan Michaels (Barrington, Ill.), Jack Phillips (Fishers, Ind.), Wade Rankin (Columbus, Ind.), Alex Rodriguez (Cudahy, Wis.), Elijah Sanchez (Rockford, Ill.), Nate Thomas (South Bend, Ind.) and Paul Turelli (Lake Forest, Ill.) as well as 2020 seniors Blake Walker and manager Alex Rest.

Toledo (23-29, 21-15 MAC) opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning. Mason Sykes reached on a one-out double then got to third on a Thomas wild pitch. Darryn Davis drove in Sykes with a groundout to Eric Erato (Sussex, Wis./Sussex Hamilton) to give the Rockets a 1-0 lead. Toledo threatened to build the lead in the second, loading the bases with no outs. Thomas, getting the start on Senior Day, got out of the jam unscathed with two popouts and a strikeout of Scott Mackiewicz to keep the game 1-0.

The Rockets took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on a Nicky Winterstein RBI single. The Huskies got that run back in the bottom half of the frame. Matt Barnes (Bloomington, Ill./Heartland C.C.) led off with a single, the Huskies' first hit of the game. He got to second base on a passed ball, then got to third after an errant pickoff throw from Toledo pitcher Connor Brandon. Barnes finished his trip around the bases by scoring on a wild pitch to make the score 2-1.

NIU (15-35, 14-22 MAC) had a chance to tie or take the lead in the bottom of the fourth. The Huskies loaded the bases on a Dunham single and one-out walks from Lonteen and Larson. Toledo then went to reliever Wyatt Jefferson, who got Barnes to hit into an inning-ending double play. The Rockets took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth as a Davis double brought Sykes around to score. Jefferson shut down the Huskies from there, throwing 5.2 innings of shutout relief. He allowed four walks, but did not allow a hit while recording three strikeouts. Toledo added an insurance run in the ninth to make the final score 4-1.

"It's tough to send your seniors out on this note," head coach Mike Kunigonis said. "They battled and kept fighting all day. We had our opportunities but couldn't capitalize. We were one or two hits away from taking the lead. Nate and Connor did a great job of keeping us in the game. We just didn't do enough offensively for those guys. We're going to keep battling and hopefully we those guys a couple wins next weekend."

The Huskies were held to two hits on the day. Dunham was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runners caught stealing. Erato and Joyce both drew a pair of walks. Thomas scattered nine hits over five innings, allowing three runs with two walks and two strikeouts. Freshman Connor Langreder (West De Pere, Wis./West De Pere) allowed one unearned run over the final four innings on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

NIU wraps up the 2021 season on the road at Bowling Green beginning Friday, May 28 at 2 p.m.
