Karl-Anthony Towns was joined by his father, Karl Towns Sr., for the Florida swing of Minnesota’s current road trip.
That was important to Towns, particularly on Mother’s Day — the second one he’s experienced since losing his mom, Jackie, to COVID-19 last year. Towns has always been able to celebrate the holiday at home with his mother, one of the few good parts of Minnesota often failing to reach the postseason, so Jackie’s loss — felt every day — is especially noticeable this weekend.
“I was emotional before we even got here to Miami. That was the love of my life. That was my soul,” Towns said. “It always brought a smile to my face. It’s gonna be different for me. But there’s a lot of memories to cherish on Sunday, and I’m glad I got the basketball so I can have something that can take my mind off of it, you know what I’m trying to say? I’m very fortunate that my father is with me. It’s something that I think that both of us understand the pain.”
Weirdest season ever
With just one week to play in the season, this is often the time to reflect on a season in terms of what went well, what didn’t and what a team’s plan needs to be moving forward.
But Ricky Rubio took a moment Friday to reflect on this season in respect to playing amid a pandemic. Rubio has previously declared the 2020-21 campaign as the “weirdest season” he’s been a part of. He likened it to a rollercoaster.
“You’re going into arenas where there’s not a lot of fans. You’re going to different arenas where there is more atmosphere. You’re going to a hotel and different rules to every state. You order room service and it comes with like a box, it’s not a plate,” Rubio said. “At the end of the day, it’s the little things that kick in your mind that say, ‘We’re in a special time.’ Forget about basketball, with everything that’s going on. With that being said, if you translate it to the court, there are some days that you feel like, ‘Man, it’s been a long season.’ And some days it feels like it goes fast quick. We just have to adapt to the situation that we live in. It’s not easy for nobody, we know, and a lot of people are going through different situations mentally, because people are different, and they live different situations, and we should have to be more positive to each other, I think, in general. Not just on the court, in general, outside, and be supportive to each other.”
