ELKINS — May 30 has been proclaimed John Zirbs Day in Elkins.
Mayor Jerry Marco signed the proclamation at City Hall in the presence of Zirbs’ sister, Carol Zirbs Murphy.
John Zirbs, a special needs person, was a 1975 graduate of Elkins High School who became the biggest supporter of EHS sports in the school’s history by adopting the alter-ego “Super Fan.” For decades, Zirbs would appear at all EHS games in full costume, including a cape, to cheer on the Fighting Tigers.
The proclamation reads, “Community spirit is infectious and it adds an immeasurable amount of value to the quality of life for those who embrace it. John Zirbs was, undeniably, the greatest example of this spirit in Elkins …
“John lived, breathed and shared his pride and love of Elkins every day and with every person he met,” the proclamation states. “While the passing of John has created a void, I challenge each and every one of you to fill that space with the same excitement and pride that John had for his community.”
In a posting on social media, Marco wrote the following:
“On May 12, 2021, the Angels rejoiced as they welcomed a new member to their choir. Their gain was a loss for the City of Elkins, as we said goodbye to our dear friend and native son John Zirbs.
“To say John was a community icon is a tremendous understatement. He was a friend to many and a stranger to none. John truly embodied the characteristics that make West Virginians great. He was kind, caring, a loyal friend, and had a permanent smile that was extremely infectious.
“John loved the City of Elkins and showed his support to various agencies within the city, but especially to the youth in our area, and expected nothing in return.
“The legacy and spirit of John will live in our hearts and continues to bring our community together as citizens share their favorite John Zirbs stories and work together to honor this incredibly special man.
“I want to express my condolences to John’s family and friends. I hope the memories of John hug your heart and offer some comfort. I personally like to close my eyes and envision John teaching his new choir members the Elkins Fight Song.”
