OXFORD, Ohio. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University track & field program put on a strong showing on day one of the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships, May 7, at Miami University's George L. Rider Track. After the first day of competition, the men sit in third (45) while the women's team is currently in sixth (26) through 6-of-21 events scored thus far.

The men's harriers opened up the meet with a gutsy showing for solid points in the 10,000m race. Redshirt sophomore Andy Payne (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington) earned a third-place finish with a personal-best time of 29:46.19. Meanwhile, redshirt freshman teammate Toby Gualter (Tawa, New Zealand-Tawa College) came in just behind Payne for fourth overall at 29:49.97.

Sophomore sprinter Kyle Martin (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Ann Arbor Huron) punched his ticket to the 100m and 200m dash finals after notching career-high clips of 10.74 and 21.95, respectively. The 400m hurdles trio of junior Payne Wylie (Elstow, Saskatchewan-Colonsay School) (53.91), sophomore Dante Lander (Dayton, Ohio-West Carrollton (Central Michigan)) (55.24), and sophomore Frankie Grey (Brentwood, N.Y.-Brentwood) (55.87) all made it through preliminaries to move on to the finals tomorrow.

In the field, graduate student Zach Harkey (Huron, Ohio-Huron) captured Eastern Michigan's sole event title of the day, earning gold in the discus with a heave of 52.86m. Classmate Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) followed close behind at 51.23m for second place. Fellow thrower, redshirt senior Chukwusom Enekwechi (Valley Stream, N.Y.-Jamaica Gateway to the Sciences (Monroe College)) achieved silver in the shot put with a toss of 17.32m. Classmate Baboucar Sallah-Mohammed (Windhoek, Namibia-Fishburne Military) also notched silver with a 7.39m long jump mark.

On the women's side, Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) produced a school-record hammer throw of 58.87m to place fourth in the event. For Clarke, she now owns the No. 1 outdoor shot put (14.83m) and hammer throw in program history. Also in the field, graduate student Kristine Bourg (Shorewood, Ill.-Joliet West) grabbed silver in the javelin throw with a PR launch of 44.07m. Elsewhere in the field, junior Nina Ward (Fairfield, Ohio-Fairfield) recorded a bound of 5.89m for second in the long jump.

Graduate student Kolby Ganther (Park City, Kan.-Northeast Magnet (Garden City C.C.)) will make appearances in the 100m dash final (11.79) and 200m dash final (24.48). Meanwhile, redshirt senior Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian) and junior Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School) are set to compete in both the 400m dash and 800m run tomorrow.

A pair of Eagles advanced to the finals in the women's 1500m race in junior Lexi Seifert (Waterford, Pa.-Villa Maria Academy) and redshirt junior Karlie Swanson (Urunga, New South Wales-Bellingen (Boise State)). Seifert finished in 4:34.64, the fourth-best time in her heat, to automatically qualify for the finals. Meanwhile, Swanson recorded a 4:34.59 to take the final spot.

In the women's 100m hurdles, juniors Morgan Iverson (Hoschton, Ga.-Mill Creek) and Alysse Wade (Mansfield, Ohio-St. Peter's) both clocked in at 14.18 seconds to move on to the finals tomorrow. For Iverson, she crushed her previous PR of 14.65 she set at the Bobcat invitational earlier in the season, March 27. Fellow classmate, Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Ann Arbor Pioneer) ran a 400m hurdles time of 1:01.71 to put her in the finals.

The second and final day of the MAC Outdoor Championships begins tomorrow at 9:30 a.m., starting with the men's hammer throw. Completing the league meet will be the women's 4x400m relay at 5:35 p.m. on the George L. Rider Track. There will be even more exciting track & field action tomorrow as 15 event titles are yet to be won.
