BRUNSWICK, Ga. – The Glynn County Police Department says they found toddlers left unattended in a car Friday. No one was injured, but the department is sending a reminder of how dangerous this is and how it could result in criminal charges.
These accidents are avoidable. Here are resources and tips available for you to follow.
Park. Look. Lock.
Park your car, look in the back and ask “Where’s Baby?” Then, lock your car.
It also doesn’t hurt to create reminders for yourself so you know when your child is in the car.
The Left Shoe Movement is an easy way to set a reminder. Simply leave your left shoe next to your child’s car seat to make sure you grab both the shoe and the child.
Take a look at this Facebook post from Glynn County Police.
The pictures are from a heat safety event explaining how hot the car is outside compared to the temperature inside.
One of them reads 86.6 degrees Fahrenheit outside, and 156 degrees Fahrenheit inside.
KidsAndCars.org says in 2018 and 2019 53 children died in hot cars.
The primary causes are the caregiver forgetting a child in the car, the child getting in the car themselves, or someone purposely leaving a child in the car.
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration says in 2020, 24 children died, and so far this year only one has died.
SafeKids.org says on average every 10 days a child dies from heatstroke in a car.
They also say cars can heat up 19 degrees in just 10 minutes.
The biggest reminder is to take action if you see it.
If you see a child alone in a car, call 911 immediately. If you are in a public place, try to locate the owner of the vehicle.
