Episode 21: The senator celebrates the expansion of the Child Tax Credit and discusses wildfire mitigation, his CAHOOTS bill and more
On this episode of the Street Roots Podcast, U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) joined host DeVon Pouncey to discuss a major expansion of the Child Tax Credit.
“This is going to reduce poverty in America amongs children 50%,” he said of the plan, which went into effect July 15. “To give you the nuts and bolts of it, it’s going to be $300 a month for each child under 6, and $250 a month for each child over 6.”
The monthly Child Tax Credit payment is deposited into parents' bank accounts if they use direct deposit for their taxes. People who don't file taxes can learn how to get the tax credit by visiting childtaxcredit.gov.
Wyden also discussed his short-term and long-term climate change plans and what can be done to assist the West Coast during what can be a dangerous fire season.
“This year in my discussions with the Biden administration, I’ve been saying, I think there’s a real danger that we’ll have multiple big fires going on at the same time all over the West," he said. "And so we’re going to need more personnel. We’re going to need to have tight coordination between local and state and federal. People are going to need the equipment.”
Wyden also shared an update on the CAHOOTS Act, his transition as the chair of the Senate Finance Committee, and, of course, the Portland Trailblazers.
