Bobcats show good tempo in last day before shoulder pads

BOZEMAN, Montana (August 7, 2021) - A day-by-day look at Bobcat football, today and throughout history…

BOBCAT NOTEBOOK
SO FAR SO GOOD: In his first preseason camp as a head football coach, Brent Vigen has been pleased with what he's seen. "We met our expectations" during the first two days of camp, he said, but that is a tiny part of the story. "It's about stacking these days. It's about continuing to improve. So you can't ever be satisfied."

FIRST-TIMER TIME: The Bobcats staff staged 11-on-11 situations for the program's youngest players at the end of Friday's practice, and MSU coach Brent Vigen said it was good to get the freshmen reps. "We had the freshmen out at the end and they're new to it," he said. "You could see that. But it's important to get them into the flow."

TWICE AS MUCH: Montana State's second day of offensive and defensive scheme installations gave Bobcat players twice as much to process, but Vigen liked his team's progress. "You double up, in theory, on the schemes that are in," he said. "I liked our tempo. It's easy to have energy for two days, have tempo for two days, so that matched what our expectations were, but I thought picking things up that were now installed for a second day and adding to that install was good."

THAT SPIDEY SENSE: The Bobcats practiced in spider pads – one-inch padding that offer the shoulders protection – for the second straight day on Saturday. Monday's practice is in shoulder pads and helmets, and the team is obligated to conduct five more 'spider' practices between now and the Wyoming game. Vigen said a focus of his staff is conduct practices that are similar in pace and tempo regardless of the structure and pads. "We really just have to make every day count," he said, "whether we're in spiders, half-pads, full-pads, it has to be pretty similar."

BOBCAT CALENDAR
August 7 in Bobcat Football History: 2020 – Under a cloud of uncertainty that would eventually become the program's first canceled season since World War II, the Bobcats returned to practice a year ago today. Head coach Jeff Choate saw joy. He saw fun. "This does not look like drudgery," he said of his team's first practice of the fall. On the other hand, the Big Sky Conference announced that the league was postponing the fall season to the spring. That essentially eliminated Montana State and Montana from competing in full seasons – a move that proved prescient when a bitter February cold spell moved in that would have made preparation for a season nearly impossible in MSU's situation. (The coaching transition also played into the decision to play no games rather than a truncated one- or two-game season.)
