A look at Bobcat football today and through the years...

A day-by-day look at Bobcat football, today and throughout history, starting with the Stats Perform preseason poll…

DAILY NOTEBOOK
TOP 25: Stats Perform issued its official preseason poll Monday, and the Big Sky is represented by – Weber State at 6, Montana at 9, Eastern Washington at 11, Montana State at 12, and UC Davis is 23. Sacramento State received votes. Reigning national champion Sam Houston State enters the season ranked first, followed by James Madison second, South Dakota State third, North Dakota State fourth, and Delaware fifth. The complete Top 25 is here.

PONDERING THE PEOPLE MOVERS: With three entrenched and experienced offensive line starters in place – Lewis Kidd, Taylor Tuiasosopo and Zach Redd – the Bobcats start from a strong point in that position group this fall. Bobcat coach Brent Vigen said the versatility those three offer, coupled with the talent of those vying to fill the two vacancies, gives the Cats a firm foothold. "Ultimately we want to get the best five out there. I think the sixth-year guys, Taylor and Lewis, provide some position flexibility. They've both played inside and out. Zach Redd's played center and he's playing guard right now. We'll have some guys within that operation that are pretty locked in, but ultimately it's about getting to the best five and younger guys more so locking into a best spot."

DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY RAMPING UP: Brent Vigen said the challenges facing Montana State's quarterbacks increase with each passing day. "The first couple days when you're really coverage-specific kind of by the day, I don't want to say it's easy by any means, but it's like taking a test and knowing most of the answers in terms of coverage," Vigen said. "Today was the biggest blend of coverage so I'm anxious to see the tape to see how that looked, but I'm pleased with the first two and today, we'll have to see how that looks."

AUGUST 9 IN BOBCAT FOOTBALL HISTORY
2018 – A pair of freshman running backs turned heads today in 2018, and they have proven to possess staying power. Isaiah Ifanse has rushed for 1,838 yards and 13 touchdowns in the past two seasons, including an MSU freshman record 1,025 in 2018, while Sumner has gained 430 yards while crossing the goal line five times. Each of the two are juniors in 2021. 2015 – Rob Ash opened his eighth – and what proved to be final – preseason camp as MSU's head coach. While nine starters returned on offense, only three starters returned on defense. The Bobcats led the Big Sky in points (41.9 per game) and yards (519.8 per game) in 2015, but finished eighth of 13 in points allowed (34.3) and 10th in yards allowed (472.5).

2021 POSITION PREVIEW
Quarterbacks
Montana State's 2021 stable of quarterbacks features three players with Division I starting experience, including two as Bobcats and one in the ACC. Tucker Rovig led the Cats to the FCS Playoff Semifinals in 2019, starting the team's last 12 games and throwing for 1,969 yards with a 15-to-5 touchdown-to-interception ratio while completing 61.6% of his passes. Casey Bauman started MSU's first three games in 2019, and North Carolina State transfer Matt McKay brought starting experience with him to Bozeman. A true dual-threat quarterback with speed and explosiveness, McKay enters the fall atop the two-deep. Rovig's experience, leadership and passing accuracy remain important factors for the Bobcat offense. He and redshirt Tommy Mellott could challenge in August, and freshman Sean Austin also joins the mix.
