Labor Day – the unofficial end of summer – is just around the corner.
Observed on the first Monday in September, Labor Day will fall on Monday, Sept. 6, 2021.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of the American worker. The holiday traces its roots to the late 19th century when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the contributions workers have made to the country.
Before it was a federal holiday, Labor Day was recognized in individual cities. New York state was the first to introduce a bill but Oregon was the first to pass a law recognizing Labor Day, on Feb. 21, 1887. Less than a decade later, 23 more states had adopted the holiday and, on June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September each year a legal holiday. That bill was later signed by President Grover Cleveland.
It’s is not entirely clear who first proposed the title “Labor Day.”
According to the Department of Labor, records show that in 1882, Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and co-founder of the American Federation of Labor suggested the holiday. Others point to Matthew Maguire, secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, New Jersey, who proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York.
Many elements of the early celebrations are still around today – parades, picnics and parties.
As a federal holiday, government offices are closed, as are state and local offices and schools.
