JACKSONVILLE – There were no fans, but there was plenty of heat. There was also no hitting.
That last part will change Tuesday, which made Monday's Day 5 the last day of the early no-pads phase of Jaguars 2021 Training Camp. Monday marked an increase intensity from the first four days, with the defense making plays on the ball, but camp will be mostly padded – with contact – moving forward.
And that makes Tuesday a big day.
"We're excited about it," Jaguars defensive lineman Roy Robertson-Harris said Monday following a two-hour, twenty-minute practice at the Dream Finders Homes Practice Complex. "It's been a long time coming.
"It's going to be a good day of work tomorrow."
Monday's work took place in temperatures that reached 83 degrees and felt like 92. After fans attended practice last Thursday through Saturday, Monday was the first of three consecutive days to be closed to fans. The Jaguars will hold the final three open practices of '21 camp Friday-Sunday.
Rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence, after a strong start to camp last week, was less consistent Monday – throwing two early interceptions. Safety Rudy Ford and cornerback D.J. Daniel intercepted Lawrence. Monday was the first practice of '21 camp with defenders playing aggressive pass defense, with defenders playing mostly off coverage last week because of NFL/NFL Players Association governing no-contact work early in camp.
The Jaguars worked extensively on seven-on-seven and team work later in Monday's practice, with Lawrence and veteran quarterback Gardner Minshew both strong later in practice. Lawrence and Minshew alternated snaps on a late team drill, combing to complete 10 consecutive passes.
Jaguars assistant head coach/linebackers coach Charlie Strong addressed the media Monday following practice, as did rookie running back Travis Etienne Jr. and Robertson-Harris. Coverage of those availabilities can be seen on Jaguas Media channels and jaguars.com later Monday.
The Jaguars are scheduled to practice Tuesday and Wednesday at 9:45 a.m.
Here's a look at Monday's practice:
PLAY OF THE DAY
The biggest plays Monday came from the defense, which took advantage of being able to make plays on the ball and play aggressively for the first time in five practices of '21 camp. Ford intercepted a long, errant pass from Lawrence and Daniel intercepted Lawrence on a shorter pass a while later. Cornerback Shaquill Griffin also intercepted Lawrence on a play on which the defense was offsides. Cornerback Sidney Jones IV also continued a strong start to camp, intercepting a short pass from second-year quarterback Jake Luton and returning it for a touchdown.
