ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio football team wrapped up day eight of fall camp on Friday morning at Peden Stadium. One of the final drills was a field goal kicking competition featuring Tristian Vandenberg, Jonah Fortkamp and Oklahoma transfer Stephen Johnson.

Johnson, along with Vandenberg and Fortkamp, sunk his final kick from over 40 yards to finish his strong day kicking. The Arlington, Texas native said the competition is pushing all three players to be better.

"I think Tristian has improved, I've improved, Jonah also has improved," Johnson said. "The coaches are doing a pretty good job of testing us regularly with pressure kicks in various scenarios, they're by no means taking it easy on us."

The whole team was watching Johnson's last kick of the day and doing whatever they could to distract him. Running back Julian Ross repeatedly reminded Johnson that he was ready to stop distracting him at any point and defensive coordinator Ron Collins took to the other side of the ball to yell "kicker" as loud as he could. Others in the crowd went with a simple "Steve" chant.

Despite the distractions, Johnson stepped up and nailed the kick. He says that the distractions help simulate a game and make him a better kicker.

"The goal is to win a championship so if you practice in scenarios that you'll never see in the game then you're only hurting yourself and your team," Johnson said. "When people are yelling at me, causing problems and bringing as much pressure as they can I do like it because I think that it's making me a better player."

Johnson landed in Athens after spending his first four seasons in Norman with the Sooners. He came to Ohio because he felt like it was the best fit for him. He felt like the coaching staff was there to work with him instead of barking orders, and he found an instant chemistry with the staff and the team.

The redshirt senior has also found the food in Athens to be better than his options were in Norman. When Johnson steps up to take a kick, he tells himself the same three things: chest towards the uprights, tempo to the ball and finish down the target line. Those three things help him lock in and execute the kick.

"As long as I do those three things, 99% of the time the outcome is good," Johnson said. "I try to stick with that and just make it as simple as possible."

Keeping things simple is a key for Johnson as he looks forward to the final weeks of camp. He will also be looking to secure that starting job by staying consistent in his approach and his attitude.
