MARSHALL — After a year on hold, the Sounds of Summer bustle was back in downtown Marshall.

On Saturday evening, crowds were gathering in front of the main stage set up in the Whitney parking lot behind Main Street — although free concerts weren’t the only thing people were excited for.

“Wow!” Emmett Stuewe said, as he circled around one of the classic cars parked along West College Drive for the Show ‘N Shine event. His parents Matt and Tara Stuewe had to walk at a brisk pace to keep up as Emmett went down the row of cars.

After the past year of social distancing and quarantine precautions, Matt Stuewe said, it was nice to have events like Sounds of Summer back, “Just to get outside.”

Many of the people downtown on Saturday were enjoying the chance to get together and have some fun. Elise and Myra Kobylinski said their family did a lot that afternoon. After the grand parade, “We had ice cream,” went in the bounce houses, and signed up for the pedal tractor pull, Elise Kobylinski said.

“I liked watching the duck races,” Myra Kobylinski said. Although the Redwood River was low, there was enough water for members of the Marshall Rotary to send hundreds of rubber ducks floating downstream to the Memorial Park footbridge.

Organizers say having family-friendly events has always been one of the main goals in planning Sounds of Summer. While there was a venue change this year, the festival still kept a variety of all-ages events, from craft and vendor shows to Saturday’s parade. Free outdoor performances by Roxbury and Nasty Habit brought the evening to a close with 1980s rock classics.

Things were going well, Sounds of Summer committee member Marc Klaith said Saturday evening.

“What a perfect day. The weather cooperated,” Klaith said. Saturday brought both clear skies and a break from the heat the area has gotten this summer.

From their vantage point riding in the Sounds of Summer parade, grand marshals Tim and Donna Swenson said it looked like a lot of people came out to enjoy the festival this year.

“All the way from the very beginning (of the parade route), there were lots of people,” Tim Swenson said. “There were lots of kids.”

“People want to be together,” Donna Swenson said. Sounds of Summer gave area residents a good opportunity to do that.

The Swensons said they enjoyed the parade, too.

“It was fun — we threw a lot of candy,” Donna Swenson said.

Klaith said after this weekend, Sounds of Summer organizers will have a lot of planning ahead of them for next year — 2022 is Marshall’s sesquicentennial.

“Next year will be bigger, with the 150th anniversary (of Marshall),” he said.
