Hany Takes Out Gilis

Egypt's World No.10 Salma Hany was on top form as she dispatched Belgium's World No.12 Nele Gilis by an 11-9, 11-6, 11-6 scoreline.

Hany overturned a 7-2 deficit in the first game to produce a formidable performance to prevail in three at her home club and that will see her face compatriot Rowan Elaraby in the next round.

“I felt pretty good out there to be honest,” said Hany afterwards.

“I was very excited for the match, it's an exciting first round for me. Nele is an amazing athlete and she keeps improving her squash every tournament. I had a game plan and I'm glad I stuck to it. I just had to accept that in some rallies, I'm going to have to run and dig deep but I enjoyed it all the way and really happy I managed to get through in three.

“Hard work continues anyway, I have a plan with my team and a long-term plan. The rankings don't really matter, you have a process and you stick to it and I just make sure I do the hard work I'm supposed to do and see where it gets me. Every tournament I evaluate with my team and see how I can improve and become the best player I can be.”

Clyne Prevails in Tough Battle

Olivia Clyne celebrates her victory

USA No.2 Olivia Clyne is through to the last 16 of the CIB Black Ball Squash Open after defeating Malaysia's Sivasangari Subramaniam 7-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-8 in 47 minutes.

Clyne will face the winner of England's Alison Waters v Egypt's Nouran Gohar, which is the last match of the day.

Here's what she had to say:

“I’m delighted to be through,” said Clyne.

“It was a brutal draw and Siva is definitely not ranked where she is supposed to be and when you see her name come up you’re definitely like “oh boy”. I knew it was going to be hard, I was hoping I was going to be able to relax at some point, not even from a ‘I’m ahead’ type of thing but just relax and play some squash. I think I did a little more boxing and gritting my teeth but I’ll take that, it’s all part of the process.

“I think it’s going to be a matter of throwing that away, taking it for what it was, which was a battle to get through and I got through it. Rest up and get ready for a big one tomorrow. Between Alison [Waters] and Nouran [Gohar] it’s going to be a big clash and I hope they have another five game big clash like they did last time at this tournament. I think it’s just a matter of trying to refocus and I didn’t get to execute my game plan like I wanted to but tomorrow is another day.”

Subramaniam said:
“I feel I didn’t take the ball early enough.

“I was waiting for it to get to the back, but then, it would die in the back. I didn’t volley enough, it could be the fact that I didn’t have any matches for a year.”

Serme on Song Against Hany

France's World No.3 Camille Serme got her CIB Black Ball Squash Open campaign off to an impressive start with a confident 11-6, 11-6, 11-1 victory in 25 minutes over Egypt's Mayar Hany.

The Frenchwoman will face Canada's Hollie Naughton for a place in the quarter finals.

Here's what she had to say to SquashTV following her win:

“It was quite demanding physically and mentally as well,” said Serme, who won the French Nationals last week.

“I tried to find my mark on the court, I wasn’t creating enough sometimes but I was fighting and trying to get every ball she would throw. That was the good point, I felt good on my legs.

“I’ve been at home, struggling a bit with a small injury, so I’m not 100% fit yet but I’m happy to be competing again and we’ll see what happens this week.

“Melissa [Alves] played really well in the final [of the French Nationals], it was a really good match and I thank her because it made me ready for fighting and ready for this tournament.”

Gohar Safely Through to Last 16

Egypt’s World No.2 Nouran Gohar secured her place in the third round of the CIB Black Ball Squash Open after she defeated experienced Englishwoman Alison Waters, 11-8, 11-3, 11-4 in the final match of the day.

The two players faced each other just three months ago on the same court but it was a much more straightforward performance for Gohar this time around to set up a last 16 battle with USA No.2 Olivia Clyne tomorrow.

“Getting Alison first round isn’t easy at all, it’s one of the toughest draws you can get,” said Gohar.

“She’s one of the most experienced players on tour right now. We had such a battle on the same court [in December] this scenario never happens when you play the next tournament on the same court against the same player. It could have gone either way last match, so I was really careful from the beginning.

“Last time the crowd was very tense and they had a heart attack I think, so I didn’t want to do the same to them today.

“I’m just enjoying myself. I came to this tournament really enjoying it, I love playing on the court. Unfortunately, I haven’t had the best conditions – one time I was injured and the next timeI wasn’t on form. I’m trying to play my best and enjoy every match because I’ve seen what it feels like not competing for three months and all the players as well. I’m really appreciating my time on court and play each point as if it was the last one.

“I have no rest days but I’ll try to deal with it.”
