Zach Wilson's pro day: How to watch, what to expect from BYU QB in NFL Draft workout - Sporting News

rintongs.blogspot.com

The clear-cut No. 1 quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft is Trevor Lawrence. After him, the waters muddy a bit, with as many as four passers challenging for the mantle of the second-best on the board.

One of the guys in the running for that spot is Zach Wilson. The BYU product put forth a terrific junior season and led the Cougars to an 11-1 record. Much of their success was due to their dynamic offense, and Wilson led that unit to new heights in his best season as a starter.

Wilson is a prospect who countless teams picking in the top 10 will have an eye on. As a result, his pro day is going to be must-watch television for draftniks who want to get the inside scoop on the teams that could be after him. That will start with the New York Jets, who are armed with the No. 2 overall pick, and the Falcons could see him as a good successor to Matt Ryan with the No. 4 pick.

Wilson's pro day on Friday is going to be critical for his draft stock. There was no central NFL Scouting Combine this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, so pro days are where these prospects are having to do most of their work. Wilson will have a chance to show off and convince the teams picking early in this draft that he is worth of being selected early and that he has the potential to be a true franchise quarterback.

Here's how you can watch Wilson in action and what to look for in his personal pro day:

When is Zach Wilson's pro day?

  • Date: Friday, March 26
  • Time: 1 p.m. ET

Wilson will get a chance to throw in front of scouts and prove himself at BYU's Pro Day. You can catch the action on Friday, March 26 at 1 p.m. ET. You can also watch it later that day during an encore performance in primetime at 8 p.m. ET.

How to watch Zach Wilson's pro day

Wilson's work will be broadcast on NFL Network during a special edition of  Path to the Draft Pro Day Special . During the event, NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah and analyst Bucky Brooks, among others, will provide insight into Wilson's skill set, his draft stock, and his overall pro day performance. Given that they've already seen first-round prospects like Trevor Lawrence, Trey Lance and Mac Jones hold their pro days, they should have some great insights and comparisons to deliver about Wilson.

What to watch from Zach Wilson during his pro day

Zach Wilson was one of the most impressive quarterbacks in the nation during his final season at BYU. On the year, he completed 73.5 percent of his passes for 3,692 yards, 33 touchdowns, and just three interceptions. He also ran for 254 yards on 70 carries with a whopping 10 touchdowns.

At his pro day, Wilson will be asked to show off the things that make him a great quarterback: His top-tier arm strength and his accuracy inside and outside the pocket.

Wilson may well have the best arm in this year's draft and it truly will be interesting to see how far he throws the ball at his pro day. Could he launch himself into Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen territory? Both of those players showed the ability to throw the ball accurately 70+ yards down the field. Wilson will certainly have a couple of long bombs pre-planned, and if he hits those in stride, they could be the talk of his day.

Additionally, Wilson will look to show his ability to throw on the move. He was a great off-script playmaker and while pro days are more about on-script abilities and rhythm passing from the pocket, BYU will have an opportunity to cook up some rollouts for Wilson to show what he can do outside of the pocket.

Wilson's measurements and athletic testing will be important as well. Despite his mobility, the 6-3, 210-pound quarterback is only expected to be faster than Mac Jones, but if he shows off better speed than expected, that could be a stock up for him, as his instincts running and making plays outside of the pocket are already good.

If Wilson performs well, he could cement himself as the No. 2 quarterback in this class. He's fighting Justin Fields for that role, so his pro day performance will be critical in helping decide whether or not he'll go ahead of Fields.

Zach Wilson's 2021 NFL Draft projection

As mentioned, Wilson is battling Fields for that No. 2 quarterback spot behind Lawrence. In all likelihood, the winner of that battle will go No. 2 overall to the New York Jets, unless they do stick with Sam Darnold as some have suggested.

In his latest 2021 NFL mock draft, Sporting News' Vinnie Iyer has the Jets going with Wilson. That's obviously the ceiling of where Wilson could land, but his floor isn't much lower. If he doesn't go to the Jets, Wilson could land with the Atlanta Falcons (No. 4 pick), Philadelphia Eagles (No. 6 pick), Detroit Lions (No. 7 pick), or Carolina Panthers (No. 8 pick). It's hard to imagine a world where Wilson isn't one of the first eight players selected on draft day.
