The Angels have opening day starter Dylan Bundy starting on Thursday against the Rockies at Salt River Fields, and have behind him what sure looks like the opening day lineup.
Manager Joe Maddon wouldn’t fully commit to announcing that this in fact was the lineup the Angels will use on April 1, but did say it was possible. Bench coach Mike Gallego actually picked the lineup for this game.
“It’s a pretty good lineup,” Maddon said. “I’ve always liked to have my bench coach do that during spring training. It’s a great way to empower them.”
The one exception could be Jared Walsh, who figures to see lots of time this season at first base. He’s not starting Thursday, and is hitting just .216/.279/.243 with no home runs in 43 plate appearances.
“I’m not a big spring training guy,” Maddon said. “I think you’re going to see more of what you saw in September.”
Walsh hit .293/.324/.646 in 32 games with the Angels last year, with all nine of his home runs coming in the season’s final month.
Maddon also didn’t have anything official to say regarding José Rojas, who is really the only infielder left in major league camp who could claim the utility spot on the Angels opening day roster after Wednesday’s moves.
“There’s no white smoke or any news to announce yet, but I talk to him all the time,” Maddon said. “I’m a big fan.”
With the Angels off on Friday, they only have five spring games remaining. Maddon said this would be his pitching schedule for the rest of the schedule:
- Saturday: Alex Cobb
- Sunday: Andrew Heaney and Griffin Canning
- Monday: Shohei Ohtani
- Tuesday: Jose Quintana
Both Heaney and Canning will pitch abbreviated outings in Sunday’s Freeway Series opener against the Dodgers in Anaheim. Maddon said it hasn’t yet been decided if Ohtani will hit on Monday, which will be at Dodger Stadium.
