Shahin Wins Fifth Game Tiebreak Over Adel

Nadine Shahin took the win in the first match of the afternoon
World No.17 Nadine Shahin took out World No.15 Yathreb Adel in the second round of the CIB PSA Black Ball Squash Open, thanks to winning a lengthy final game tie-break.
The Egyptian duo went at it for nearly a hour, with their contrasting styles making for an intriguing match. It was the lower-ranked Shahin that took the win, advancing to the last 16.
"She had a big lead [in the fifth] so I just lost all of the stress and pressure."

“It felt good. I feel good on this court. Maybe, used to it a bit more than her, as she didn’t play the last Black Ball, so I think I had that in my favour a bit, but she adapted really quickly.
“I wanted to keep going [in the second], but she had a Plan B. She surprised me In that second game and then the third game was so tight! Fourth game did not go my way and I really thought I would lose in the fifth.
“She had a big lead, 8-3 or something. I let go of the pressure, and I said to myself, ‘Just go out and play, this is not the last tournament. We have a lot more, thank God!’
“I moved everything from my mind and I stuck to my plan, and it worked. This is the mental toughness I am talking about. I have been working on it for a couple of months because I need it so bad. It has been a while since I played a tough five-setter. I have always played short matches so I am pleased with my performance.”

Nadine Shahin (EGY) bt Yathreb Adel (EGY) 3-2: 11-4, 5-11, 11-8, 8-11, 15-13 (59m)
El Hammamy Holds Off Aitken In Five-Game Thriller

Hania El Hammamy in action
In a contender for match of the season so far, Hania El Hammamy had to fight her way past Scotland’s Lisa Aitken, in a five-game thriller at the Black Ball Sporting Club.
El Hammamy won this event twelve months ago with a stunning victory, but it looked like her week would end prematurely at points during her second round encounter with the Scot. However, she came through to win in typical style.
"She had a very good plan – the positive thing is that I found a way to get through it!"

“It was definitely a tough match today. Lisa took me by surprise to be honest. I wouldn’t say I played my best but I am glad to get through,” the World No.5 said.
All credit to Lisa, she is very talented and she really played well today. I couldn’t find my length or lines today. I got a little bit better at the end and hopefully it will get better with each round.
“I managed to push to the end. I didn’t give up at some point when Lisa was really in control and I was behind her. She had a very good plan and the positive thing was that I found a way to get through it.
“With the pressure and playing five-gamers in the first round, it gave me the feeling of playing in the final, but it was slightly different!”

Perry Dispatches Metwally In Three

Sarah-Jane Perry
Defending CIB Black Ball Squash Open champion Sarah-Jane Perry got her 2021 campaign underway in the best way possible, with a convincing victory over Egypt’s Mariam Metwally.
She controlled the first game, and apart from a minor blip at the start of the second, Perry never looked like she would lose, as she aims to win back-to-back titles in Cairo.
"I've won a couple of other tournaments after winning them the previous year, so I'm taking that into this one too!"

“Obviously I started rather well, but I know she is dangerous, particularly in the middle. She showed that at the start of the second so I was pleased to get back in there and win that,” the Englishwoman said.
“I wasn’t thinking about getting back to win the game, I was just thinking about getting back to playing and controlling the match. When it got close, I then thought about it. I was reasonably solid in the third as well so I was happy to close it out.
“I have won a couple of other tournament after winning them the previous year and I am taking that for this one as well because its different calendar years, even though it is literally the next tournament, so it is a bit different.
“Obviously everything is different with the COVID rules and that but the PSA have done a great job so I am just trying to tick all the boxes with my preparation and then see what I can do on court.
“As the commentators have kindly been pointing out for the last eight years, the mental side of my game is where I have definitely made improvements, but they needed to be made and there is still plenty more to make. I am trying to let my racket work do the talking and not my mouth, for once.”

El Sherbini Downs Sobhy

Nour El Sherbini
Three months after defeating Sabrina Sobhy at the CIB Black Ball Open 2020, World No.1 Nour El Sherbini secured the same result against the same opponent at the latest edition of the tournament in Cairo.
"The last Black Ball wasn't a good one, so it's hard for me mentally to come back to the same place and play the same opponents."

“I am really happy with my performance. Sabrina is tough, she is playing really well. The last time we played was on the same court! It was the first round for me so it was a tricky one. I just wanted to play good and get my body and my game going, so I am really glad I got it done,” the 'Warrior Princess' said.
“It is never easy and every match has a different situation and every tournament is different. The last tournament was at Black Ball and now we are here again, back-to-back. It wasn’t a good one for me last time so it is hard for me mentally to come back, and to play the same opponents as well. I am working hard on my mental game.
“Every time I come here, I always want to put my name on the trophy but it never happens. I will do my best this week and let’s hope I do so!”
