NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The IUPUI men's golf team finally got its spring slate underway on Monday (Mar. 15), competing in the Bash at the Beach, hosted by Appalachian State at the Surf Golf and Beach Club. Senior Keegan McCullough led the way, carding an opening round, 3-under 69 before playing 17 of his 18 holes in round two to 1-over. He's currently among the top-10 of the 61-player field at 2-under.
Monday's second round was halted due to darkness and will be resumed on Tuesday morning, followed by the third and final round.
Collectively, IUPUI shot 16-over par after an opening round 296 and is 8-over par through 17 holes in round two.
"Today was good to get back out there. It's definitely nice to start knocking the tournament rust off," McCullough said. "I need a good day tomorrow. I feel very confident that I can go deep enough to win it tomorrow."
McCullough was brilliant in the opening round, getting to 4-under through 13 holes after making birdie on No. 4. He gave a shot back late in the round with a bogey on No. 7 before making back-to-back pars to end his round.
Sophomore Matthew Baxter made a triumphant return to the Jaguars' lineup after missing significant time due to injury. Baxter notched an opening round of even par 72, keyed by back-to-back birdies at one point after the turn.
Freshman Brock Aten notched a round of 75 in his collegiate debut, including making birdie on his first collegiate hole. Taylor Gardner rounded out the Jaguars' scoring four with an opening round 80 and Josh Yoder chimed in with an 81.
In round two, Baxter had six birdies on his card through 17 holes and sits at even par while McCullough opened with back-to-back birdies and sits at 1-over. Gardner is at 3-over and made the Jaguars lone eagle of the day on the par-5, No. 1. Aten is 4-over and Yoder sits at 8-over heading into the resumption of the round on Tuesday.
UConn leads the 11-team field at 563 and Jacksonville State is next in line at 564. Host Appalachian State is third at 11-under 565. JSU's Jesus Montenegro and UConn's Jared Nelson are tied atop the individual leaderboard at 6-under heading into Tuesday's finale.
The tournament will conclude on Tuesday with final results and a recap being posted to IUPUIJags.com immediately afterwards.
