Celebrating Arbor Day is part of the city’s annual designation as a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation.

As part of the celebration, the committee will offer to give away two trees – a northern pin oak and a Japanese tree lilac – to the winners of a prize drawing to be determined at the committee’s April meeting.

Owners of property within city limits who will plant the tree on that property can sign up through April 9 at city hall or by emailing clockhart@arvig.net or sgwiazdon@arvig.net.

Committee member Steve Jones made two separate motions to recommend both the April 30 proclamation and the tree giveaway, and the motions passed unanimously.

Public works parks employee Stephanie Pazdernik said she applied for this year’s Tree City USA designation in December. Ordinarily the city would hear back in January, she said, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic she now expects the response in June.

City council representative Bob Wills moved to approve soliciting bids for nursery stock to replace trees on city property in 2022. The motion passed unanimously.

On Pazdernik’s advice, they are seeking bids for one white pine and one Black Hills spruce, each a minimum of three feet high, and two each of red maple, northern pin oak, Red Splendor crabapple and Japanese tree lilac, each 1-1/4 inch bare root.

Bids will be solicited from Flying W Gardens, Forest and Floral and Hafner’s Greenhouse and must be submitted by April 9. Bids will be opened at the committee’s next meeting.

The committee also discussed the grant the city received to have an intern do a tree inventory on city property, identifying trees infected with emerald ash borer and replacing them with a pest-resistant variety.

City Administrator Angel Weasner said the deadline for final reimbursement for the project is Sept. 30, 2022. She said she would look further into what the grant requires.

The committee discussed completing the project this summer, most likely hiring a college student between their junior and senior year. Brad Witkin with Minnesota DNR Forestry said he could provide a list of professional private consultant foresters who could be contacted.

Pazdernik said she will prepare a map for the intern but advised the committee that she will not have time to provide close supervision.

The Urban Forestry Committee’s next meeting is scheduled for 8 a.m. Monday, April 12 at city hall.
