BATAVIA — More than hundred days of in-person learning — that’s where St. Joseph Regional School is following the Sept. 8 start of school.
St. Joseph celebrated the 100th day Feb. 23 with a “Remember to be Grateful” theme and a variety of wellness activities, Principal Karen Green says.
The activities included an escape room, 100th day exercises, Make Your Own Yogurt Parfait, Invisible Scribble Art projects and Stations of the Cross Soul Core.
“It would be 100 days that the kids were in school, not counting the weekends. We’ve been very fortunate to be able to do that,” Green said.
“We’ve been in session five days a week since Sept. 8. The kids have had to wear masks. They’ve had to social distance, we’ve had to sanitize more than ever,” the principal said. “We celebrate 100 days ever year, but this year seemed to be a little more special.”
The principal noted the sixth-graders at St. Joseph will move on to junior high at Notre Dame High School next year.
“I‘ve thought of them a lot this year that there last year at our school will be very different from any other they’ve had,” she said.
Green said St. Joseph put a reopening plan together after getting direction from the state and local health department.
“Our goal was from the moment we heard that (direction) to get that (plan) in place and get the kids back in school. The majority of families, that was their goal,” she said. “They were very happy to hear that we had a plan to keep everyone safe and keep everyone in school.”
Green did say that fewer than 10 positive cases among students at school were found so far this year. At the time of those cases, St. Joseph had to quarantine the entire class and switch those students to remote learning, but the school continued to offer in-person learning for the rest of the students, she said.
“Some of the classes we had to quarantine ... after Thanksgiving and after Christmas, there were some positive cases in our school. We switched to remote learning when those particular classes were home,” Green said.
”We have not had any (COVID) cases that have spread throughout our school. We have not had one case that started with a child in the classroom and spread to other children in the classroom. We’re very thankful for that,” the principal said. “It was certainly in our reopening plan ... but we have not reached that point where we have had to close the school down. It has not warranted that this year.”
For the 100th day celebration, St. Joseph changed its plans a little, Green said.
“It tended to be more by grade level,” she said of the celebration in the past. “This year, we decided to make it a full school celebration for all of us. We tried to make the activities about being grateful to be in school. We used our gymnasium, we used our cafeteria which is a very large space. Some of the activities were right in their classrooms.”
Green said students enjoyed the activities.
“We were able to move them around to different spaces in the building safely,” she said. “They loved the Make Your Own Yogurt Parfait. They had a choice of strawberries, chocolate chips, granola and crushed-up chocolate cookie crumbs that they could put in their own parfaits. I think the scribble art, they seemed to enjoy that too. The kids said all in all, they loved all the activities. I was down at the Make Your Own Yogurt station. Food is always a crowed pleaser.”
Green said the 100th day celebration has been held annually for at least the last 25 years that she’s been at the school, if it has not gone on longer. The kids liked that we did it as a full school this year, she said.
“Some teachers said we should do this every year, so I think we might have a new tradition in place.
“A big thank you to Blue Pearl Yoga for providing the faculty and staff with a Breath, Move, and Relax session and to Commit to Well for providing lunch after,” Green said.
