The Fenton Freedom Festival Committee had given itself a deadline of April 5 to decide if this year’s Freedom Festival would take place to celebrate Independence Day on the Fourth of July.
Disappointed, Pat Lockwood, committee chair and Meghan Grimshaw, event coordinator, sent a letter to the entire committee saying that this year’s Freedom Festival has been canceled.
In the letter, Lockwood and Grimshaw explained that after several meetings and discussions with the city of Fenton and due to the safety risks associated with COVID-19, this year’s Freedom Festival will not take place.
July 4 falls on Sunday this year and the festival would normally take place on Monday, July 5. The current State of Michigan order allows for a maximum of 1,000 people at an outdoor gathering and this popular festival draws far more
than 5,000 to the parade and close to 20,000 viewing the fireworks.
They wrote, “As we are once again disappointed with this decision, we know you would agree that the safety of all associated with the festival is our first priority. As members of the festival committee, you understand the planning that takes place to produce such a successful event, we established April 5 as our deadline to make a decision based on the most current information available.”
Cancellations aren’t happening just in Fenton. Communities across Michigan are dealing with these difficult decisions and early summer festivals are being canceled due to expansive crowds.
Fenton City’s Street Experience, a four-hour event held on Thursday and Friday evenings in downtown Fenton encourages support for local restaurants and shops. These events began last summer in response to COVID-19 restrictions and to boost revenue for downtown businesses. With the closing of downtown streets, including music and farmers markets, Street Experience invites the community to shift its July 4 celebrations to Friday, July 2, during the four-hour road closure.
Lockwood and Grimshaw wrote that the committee welcomes suggestions and ideas to lend a Freedom Festival feel to the Street Experience. The festival’s Queen and King will be invited to be present, Fourth of July decorations will be encouraged, patriotic music and a request to distribute flags are a few of the suggestions.
Lockwood and Grimshaw said that that the committee looks forward to a return to the best Fourth of July Festival in Genesee County and beyond.
