30 Day Countdown, Day 30: Draft a Pac-12 Offensive Player - UW Dawg Pound

Welcome back, Husky fans! If you only come to this site during football season, then it’s about time to start getting ready for the opening kickoff. With 30 days to go until the season opener against Montana, the UW Dawg Pound beings its annual tradition of counting down the last month before the season begins. Remember to check back every day- including the weekends- for a new post in the series. From analytical to opinionated and from hard-hitting to goofy, we will have all the important topics covered in the next 30 days.

Today, we kick off the series by asking who would be the best addition to this specific Husky roster from the rest of the conference. We have made the exercise a little more challenging by disqualifying anyone who made an all-conference team last year. Among the rest of the returning players, who would you most want to wear the Purple and the Gold in 2021?

RB Max Borghi, Washington State

I hate to antagonize Husky fans in the first post of the 30 Day Countdown, but the fit is too perfect to ignore. UW’s offense has not had a dynamic lead back since Myles Gaskin left Montlake, and Borghi certainly fits the bill. While he only played one game in 2020 due to injuries, Borghi has piled up over 1200 yards on 6.1 yards per carry on a team that was allergic to running the ball, and he has added 978 receiving yards, as well. He has been one of the most explosive, terrifying players in the conference for two years and would slide to the top of the Husky RB depth chart with a game-breaking skill that no one else in the room has demonstrated so far.

QB Jayden Daniels, Arizona State

Daniels is the most accomplished returning QB starter who has not made the All Pac-12 team (Kedon Slovis made it last year). Daniels has a staggering 22/3 TD/INT ratio in his two seasons leading the Sun Devils and has added 578 rushing yards in those 16 starts. It’s worth noting that ASU has tended to run first with Daniels, which has protected him from difficult passing situations. On the other hand, he nearly single-handedly beat USC with his scrambling last year and the Sun devils only lost the game due to befuddling defensive errors late. How does Daniels compare to Dylan Morris? Their passing stats this year might end up looking pretty similar, but Morris can’t compare to Daniels’ running ability. Adding that dimension to the offense could swing a game when the offense is otherwise stalled out.

WR Kyle Phillips, UCLA

For a receiver under 6’ and 200 lbs to earn a top 300 recruiting ranking coming out of high school, he would have to be able to do some special things on the field. After a quiet redshirt year in 2018, he caught 60 passes as he emerged as a starter throughout 2019. He caught 38 more passes in an abbreviated 2020. UW has impressive physical specimens at WR in Jalen McMillan and Rome Odunze. The receiving corps only has Terrell Bynum as a steady, experienced producer. Phillips would answer depth and consistency questions about the unit.

OG Ryan Voorhees, USC

The Washington offensive line looks like it should be stacked on paper. The only spot where I have heard any questions about performance is at guard, where M.J. Ale’s hold on the position is not quite as iron-clad as his line mates. Voorhees is one of the most stable, experienced interior offensive linemen in the conference. I won’t pretend that I’m qualified to analyze his individual production, but USC has had one of the better blocking units for the last few years and Voorhees has been a strong link in that chain. If you’re of the opinion that our guard spot could use an upgrade, he’s probably the best available.

The Verdict

If I had to pick someone on this list, it would be Borghi. I see him as a more consistent, more productive version of Sean McGrew. The UW offense had a solid foundation in 2020 and needs more explosiveness to take its production to the next level. Among returning Pac-12 players, I don’t see anyone who can turn an average play into a big gainer more than Borghi. As much as I hate the idea of injecting Coug DNA into the Huskies, at least this move would take away one of their most productive players.
